Shaolin Soccer - the Gymkata of the next generation!!

Here’s a link to another thread about this movie. I saw the trailer for it before BulletProof Monk too, and I’ll definatly go see it for a matinee. Don’t think I’d pay full price for it, but worth $5 or so. Something about cheesy Kung-Fu movies that just makes me loose all sense.

Yay the new policy on threadbumping! I think this is the most recent thread on the subject.

Anyway, my wife and I saw it last night, after having passed it over several times at the video store. It was sublime! i was guffawing helplessly during several scenes, and tears of laughter were running down my wife’s face.

Yeah, there were some slow bits in the middle. But then there were the transcendant bits. “When I want to sing, it fills me with an undeniable pressure, and I feel that I must release my emotion or explode.” Hee hee hee!

The DVD we got had both the US release and the Chinese release on it. We watched the full US and bits of hte Chinese.

Benefits to the US release: full subtitling. The Chinese release sometimes forgets to subtitle, and there are long sequences in which characters are yelling at one another with no translation. THe movie’s not all about the dialogue, though, so it’s not a huge deal.

Benefits to the Chinese release: the really funny sequences. The US release inexplicably cut some of the most hilarious scenes.

What a joy of a movie! Now I’m looking forward to Kung Fu Hustle even more.

I bought the Asian extended version off eBay long before they released the Miramax cut in theaters here, and I loved it, bad subtitling and all. I have used “I am full of creative and enthusiasm!” as a rallying cry ever since. It’s too much fun, and I hear Kung Fu Hustle is even better in every way imaginable!

Oh yes. I highly recommend this film to -anyone- who likes cheesy kung-fu films. Me and my friends were absolutely rolling. I’m really, really looking forward to Kung Fu Hustle (which I had preview tickets for, but was too sick to attend! :frowning: )

A great fun film. I love the humour, and even the Bollywoodesq dance scene. Even though wire-kung-fu is boring in action movies, this film realises how silly it is and runs with it to great comic effect.

I actually enjoyed Kung Fu Hustle even more. Catch it when it comes to a theater near you. Without giving any spoilers… the Landlady is hilarious.

Yeah–I do like me some wire-fu, but I appreciate the silliness with which it’s treated here. During one of the fight scenes–er, soccer matches–they face off against a team of high-flying monks–er, soccer players–and one of the good guys looks at them in astonishment and says, “How are they doing that? They must be using wires!” It cracked me up.

Just saw this on Starz the other day, though it was dubbed. SUPER funny! I have to see the whole thing one day!

The landlady is indeed hilarious, and what’s more, the actress who plays her was just arrested for running an illegal gambling operation.

I’ve got it on DVD, but haven’t seen the whole thing yet (I’ve only gotten as far as the recruiting of the team). I like what I’ve seen so far, though the early bits are a tad slow.

I’m sure it’ll get even better once they hit the field.

Correction: She wasn’t running it, she was just there. Sorry.

Good to see this pop up. I borrowed the extended DVD from a local library a couple of weeks back. What a hilarious film, although I’m not sure whether or not all of the comedy is intentional. My kids both loved it as well, so it spans generations. My son has dubbed himself “Titanium Leg”.

BTW, am I the only one who thought the goalkeeper was a total spoof on Bruce Lee, including the hair and yellow catsuit he wore in goal?
