My favorite current rock band is Jeremiah Freed and I highly doubt many of you have heard of them. They are EXCELLENT. This is rock the way it was meant to be, taking the style of the 70s and mixing it with the grunge rock of the 90s. Try listening to their song “Again” and tell me you don’t like it… I dare you! And almost all their songs are that good!
Well, the Flametrick Subs are my personal favorite Austin local band. Awesome psychobilly rock, a one handed upright bass player, and the Satan’s Cheerleaders…I mean, what’s not to love? Oh, and the music is really damn good, too!
I’ve also been listening to my Jabe album a LOT lately. Great modern Americana music. Very talented group. I first heard them when they showed up to do an interview/performance at the t.v. station I work at. They showed up and the drummer asked our producer if we had a drum set. (apparently, he forgot the memo that he was supposed to bring his insturments with him). When we told him no, he just said “Eh, I’ll figure something out,” and wandered around our studio and fashioned a set out of junk, rubber balls, buckets, and various other things. And it sounded damn near perfect. Like I said, very talented band.
Also, I gotta give props out to Guitar Wolf. They’re a Japanese garage/rock band, and they just absolutely RULE!!! Nothing but pure rockandroll!
Another great band from across the way are the Red Elvises. Three Russian guys (and now one American drummer) who play surf/rockabilly/country/rock music. Amazing stage presence and just all round great stuff!
A good deal of the music I listen to is supposed to be pretty bit in parts of Europe. The last few albums by Amorphis have been outstanding (actually all their stuff is amazing, but most people can’t handle the growls). I also really like Porcupine Tree, Rapture, Symphony X, Lacuna Coil, Pain of Salvation, Nevermore, In Flames, Iced Earth, Green Carnation, and of course, the mighty Opeth!
Whew! I didn’t mean for the list to be quite that long!
Crooked Fingers is one of the most original bands I have heard in a long time. The songwriting on their latest album is incredible. There are a must hear.
Very cool. A little more folksy/pop then straight up-rock, but they can get loud enough to count.
Or, if you want your music loud and rude, may I suggest: http://www.fabulous-disaster.com/
Girl-punk at it’s finest. They have one song called “Rich B*&$Q#es in Volvos Piss Me Off.” Fantastic.
I enjoy the “raging Celtic bluegrass rock” (their own description) of The Clumsy Lovers. They come to town about twice a year, and wouldn’t you know it, they’ll be here next week - while I’m out of town on vacation.
