  1. Try to get into the mindset of the person who wrote the site you’re looking for.

Let’s say you’re looking for a cheap hotel in Rome.

A commerical hotel search site might use terms like “budget”, “value” etc

A blog from a fellow traveller might instead refer to a “great” or “cheapo” hotel instead.

  1. The “-” sign is especially useful for shopping - “-compare” will knock out Kelkoo etc, which can be great for removing clutter.

  2. Keep looking! Don’t just give up if it’s not on Page 1, click on Page 14 and see what comes up.

  3. Search a specific site only… “site:www.straightdope.com” and then a query will look for pages only at the Straight Dope.
