Sharing/splitting referral bonus

Neighbor’s son and his wife had to move back in with them a few months ago after a covid slowdown cost them their jobs. I mentioned that my employer was hiring and if he applies put my name down as the referral.

He got a job and 60 days later my pay stub lists a $500.00 “referral bonus”.

Those of you who have gotten a referral bonus do you share with the applicant? If so, how much?

I know they are not destitute but I am sure a little extra money would help towards them moving out and with my truck needing new tires before winter this was nice unexpected extra money.

It would nice of you to share, but I don’t believe it is expected. He got a job that hopefully he likes. You got a finder’s fee. That is a win win already.

I was hired as a referral and the person who referred me got a bonus, plus won a camcorder in a quarterly drawing for successful referrals.

All I got was a new job. Which I think is OK.

I’m glad this thread came up. I referred a friend to the same company at which I’m an independent contractor, and after 30 days I got my $300 referral bonus, and I was torn about whether or not to share it with her. Fortunately (for me, and unfortunately for her), the decision was made for me when Mrs. Biscuits suddenly needed something or other that, coincidentally, cost around $300.

It’s actually common courtesy to share referral bonuses with the first four people that provide you advice after asking for it. PM for venmo address!

Ah, crap. In at number 5.

Therefore, I would not share.

I usually treat my candidate to lunch once the bonus comes through.

Just 60 days? Nice. We require the new hire to be employed for at least 180 days before we’ll give someone a referral bonus. The answer to your question is that you are not expected to share your referral bonus with anyone. That money is yours.

Yeah, while I like to think of myself as a nice person it never even crossed my mind that sharing the referral in that way would be a thing. It’s a payment from the company meant to incentivize current employees to keep an eye out for good candidates. The hired candidate’s incentive is salary and benefits.
