Shatner Has Been. A new CD. Uh-Oh.

I confess that I have not downloaded any of these tracks yet, but I’m sure they’re all equally horrific:

TV, movies, “music,” conventions, books…This guy is unstoppable.

“William Shatner - Hasbeen”

Intentional or not, that’s pretty funny.

I’m in the middle of the first track and it’s pretty entertaining–his OTT emoting is clearly tongue-in-cheek, and the weirdly phrased sing-songy delivery is irresistable (if not exactly “good” ) .

Oh boy–“Has Been” (track 8) is a kinda weird “Ghost Riders in the Sky” salute about celebrity…

Well, at least it isn’t a hip hop album.

Koening: How can he do a rap song as a spoken word piece?
Melllvar: He found a way.

Oh yeah, this looks to be good.

Wait, has he really done that and I missed out on it? I was just joking about that with someone the other day; we wanted to see Shatner cover the works of Public Enemy as spoken-word beat poetry.

“I don’t THINK I can HANDLE… She GOES… CHANNEL… to CHANNEL… go looking for a HERO… she WATCH… channel ZERO.”

Produced by Ben Folds. Special appearance by Henry Rollins. Wow.

There’s actual musical credentials on there. The first track, was… Good. Unconventional, but good. The Transformed man this ain’t.

He does “Slim Shady” on an episode of Futurama.

Sorry to go against the flow guys, but I’m looking forward to this one. I’ve heard “Common People” and it’s great. Shatner does the spoken word part, and Joe Jackson chimes in toward the end.
Shatner, Ben Folds, and John Painter worked together a few years ago on the Fear Of Pop, Vol 1 track “In Love,” and it rocked! They even had a live appearance on Conan. I think this one is going to surprise everyone.

This is going to be first CD I’ll have bought in six years.

Durrrr.

THE first CD.

Sorry for the triple post, but for those you who haven’t yet, try Track 08 - Has Been. It’s hilarious.

Bill Shatner had at some point the Grand Epiphany that the way to go was, that if you are doomed to become a parody of yourself, you should embrace and own that parody of yourself. I won’t call it “genius” but it’s damn profitable for sure.

… and I’m just waiting for the inevitable Shatner/Nimoy staging of The Sunshine Boys. You know it’s coming…

You know… that would be funny.

"Come in…

AND ENTER!"

I have to strongly second that. It’s hysterical, and completely true that most people who describe Shatner as a “has-been” haven’t accomplished one percent of what he has… been.

Okay, THAT’s funny. I’ll listen to the tracks at home. In the meantime, if anything, Shatner’s use of his has-been-ness is starting to grate. He’s frickin’ everywhere these days. If he rationed himself out a bit it would be more amusing and wouldn’t get old so fast, unlike the Priceline commercials. :stuck_out_tongue: But his guest spot on Futurama was hilarious.

Don’t get me wrong… while I spent a good many years disliking the man intensely, now that he’s embraced his destiny as a, well… has-been, I’ve grown to like him and even in some cases, love him.

I’ll buy the CD and I’ll probably have a good (good-natured) augh at it but it’s still bizarre and I’m still happy it’s not a hip-hop album.

Ah, but are you willing to Stalk William Shatner to prove your love?

He does a rap based on Shakespeare’s Julius Ceasar in the movie Free Enterprise.

I really need to see that movie.`
