Shaving methodology (Ladies, too!)

How I shave; wet is better than dry, and always with cream.

I prefer to shave in the shower. I start with the cheeks, move to the neck, then chin and lower lip, and finish off with the upper lip. First I shave with the direction of growth, and then against it; this gives me a real close shave. Perhaps some of our darker hued brethren can enlighten us on the issue of Folliculi Barbi (I know, I butchered the spelling).
My wife dry shaves her legs, which just makes me cringe!

I shave at the sink, before the shower.
I start on the right side and do the enmtire side, down to the jawline, ear to goatee.
Then I do the same on the left.
THen I do the underside of the jaw right then left. Finishing in the center.
Above the jawline I shave with the grain, under the jawline I shave against.

Long separated by cruel fate, the star-crossed lovers raced across the grassy field toward each other like two freight trains, one having left Cleveland at 6:36 p.m. traveling at 55 mph, the other from Topeka at 4:19 p.m. at a speed of 35 mph.

Ouch Blue, dry shaving her legs, mine would never heal. I do mine in the tub, lather em up and get rid of it.

I opened the door, and look who I found. Damn I’m good

My husband shaves my legs weekly for me. I do touchups throughout the week. It’s the way to go, believe me!

I used to shave in the shower; even had a nice magnifying mirror I could pull through the curtain in there with me. Then my drain started to clog up.

Now I step out of the shower onto the bathmat, leaving the shower running, and lather up and shave over the sink. Post-shower shaving seems preferable to me, as the hot water and steam has already softened up the facial whiskers.

Start on the right, with the grain, then moustache area, finish on the left.

Then step back into the shower to warm up again, and get ALL that damn lather off.

I somehow got that duty too. How did this happen?

VB: this is so weird, but I thought of asking this same question after I shaved this morning. I realized that nobody ever showed me how to shave, I just figured it out.

anyone: I have this weird hair pattern on my neck. On the lower half, the hairs grow up; on the upper half, they grow down (downward, not feathers :)). Does anyone else have this problem.

And I always shave my jawline & chin poorly, so I opt for a beard, even though my chin hairs are graying.

I usually shave my legs and, ahem, other body parts in the shower, with soap.

“That’s entertainment!” —Vlad the Impaler

Damn…I’ve never had a man shave my legs. Anyone wanna volunteer?

In any event…DRY SHAVING? ::shudder:: Only time I ever did that was with an electric. And only for a couple of weeks - I hated it. Now I lather up in the shower, grab the Mach 3, and go. Then apply lots of lotion so my skirts don’t static cling to my legs. (Random other question…why are men’s disposables SO much better than women’s??)

“Jesus Mary Joseph…you’re a biker chick!” - co-worker, upon hearing of my tattoo.

Oh, and I do the with-then-against grain shaving.

I also use the relatively new triple-bladed Mach 3. It does give a closer shave, IMO, but the head is floppier than the Sensor.

Note and question for other Mach 3ers: one local supermarket took the Mach 3 cartridges off of the display area in toiletries. You have to go to the pharmacy and ask for a pack. They said it’s because of shoplifters. But then, what’s to stop me from leaving without buying them after I get them from the pharmacist? Does the store where you get razors do this too?

Falcon: Damn…I’ve never had a man shave my legs. Anyone wanna volunteer?

Sorry, Falcon. My wife already raised an eyebrow when I told her that you sometimes come to my office complex on business and that we could meet for lunch.

Falcon: why are men’s disposables SO much better than women’s??

'cause men’re most of the market. Except for us bearded ones, we shave daily. Also, if a woman messes up shaving, she can cover up her mistake (longer dress, slacks). Men need to have a near-perfect shave; deep facial wounds are hard to deal with on a daily basis.

AWB - The Safeway near me does the same thing with the Mach 3 cartridges! And I have NO idea why…there’s a police substation in their PARKING LOT, for Christ’s sake!

And AWB…what, I’m the Crystal City threat now? grin Don’t worry…I don’t meet with my clients that often. Thank god.

And as for your facial wounds…ever have a razor slice your ankle wide open?? Try hiding THAT under a pair of slacks. ::shudder:: Yet another reason I love a casual office in winter…jeans and sweatshirts, here I come!

I usually use an electric razor, just because I’m lazy.

About once a week, I’ll shave with a real razor. Lather up over the sink, start with my right cheek, back towards my sideburns (or lack thereof, depending on how long “sideburns” have to be to be sideburns) and move forward. Around my mouth, then work towards my left sideburn. On to the neck, always up, never down. Then wash it all off, patch up the wounds, and its off to face another day.

Jeremy…

Nobody ever calls me after they’ve done something smart.

AWB:

I have the same problem, and I have no idea why it’s like that.

Since I’m a hairy guy, I have to shave every other day. I used to shave dry for a few months before I went to gel because without the gel, I couldn’t tell where I already shaved. I never got irritated while shaving dry.

I use shaving gel and a razor. I have my cheeks first, then under the sideburns, under the chin, around the neck, under the lips, and under the nose.

And, as everyone knows by now, I shave my pubic hairs off as well.

Louie, I tried that once (pubic); several weeks and 5 pounds of talc later I stopped itching and sticking. Never again!
Falcon, I’ll shave’em for you, but it means a round trip to Idaho!

“Hey! How 'bout that Toe Jam?”

Once I discovered Gillette Good News Plus razors with the lubricating strip, I gave up using any kind of lather, soap or lotion. I think that strip must be some kind of soap; works great with just hot water. Caveat: Don’t use these with foamy type lathers, as it makes long gooey strings when the strip reacts with the lather. And avoid generics altogether; as worthless on your face as a razor that has been used to shave legs.

Uke Ike and others are right on! Shaving after the shower helps soften up the whiskers. For those kids looking forward to being old enough to shave: IT’S A DRAG! I’ve used top-of-the line electrics, disposables, two and three blade razors and was never happy with the results. It seemed the only really good shave I ever received was when the barber did it. AND THEN…I got one of those old fashioned shaving brushes like Grandad used to use, a bar of shaving soap and a shaving mug. (Actually, I liberated a huge coffee mug from the kitchen) Run the hot water, use the brush to lather up the soap and to apply the soapy foam to your face! Then, shave as usual. Don’t ask me why, but ever since I started this method, I’ve never nicked or cut myself and I seem to get a closer shave then ever before. Not bad for a guy who gets 5 o’clock shadow at 2 in the afternoon and will only shave once every two or three days because I dislike it so much! Any other advice tipsters?

With God as my witness, I thought turkey’s could fly.

With a shaving gel, after a shower, against the grain. Left side with the left hand, right side with the right hand.

Oddly enough, while in the army saw guys shaving both sides with the same hand.
In fact just about all of them did. Weird!

I shave with the same hand for both sides, too!
I’m surprised at the responses where folks shave against the grain as I do. Most people I’ve addressed the issue with think it’s weird; I’m glad I started this thread, it’s been interesting!

I shave in Mutual Fund accountsh.

And I divershify my portfoliosh.
