Reviews never come out this early (and rarely more than a week or two in advance, especially for big movies, by my memory).
Saw the early preview tonight. It has some slow spots but really picks up in the third act - overall, pretty good. Though I liked the Marvel Captain Marvel, this one is better, imo.
I’ve got a ticket for it opening weekend and am looking forward to it. The trailer makes me think Big-Meets-Superhero.
DC needs an ant man movie, humorous and light hearted and fun.
The AP posted a review: [url=]Review: DC superhero pic ‘Shazam!’ is a joy…seriously.
The first two sentences from the AP review are:
“But wait,” you say:
The review emphasizes that the movie is, above all, a rollicking good time.
Saw it today (Fandango is running a bunch of “see it early” screenings).
To answer a comment above, in many ways it is the Antman of the DCU, so far. It is a little bit corny (but then, it is based on a 1940’s comic) but moves along well, has a lot of integral humor and a lot of heart. If you’re willing to go along for the ride, I think you’ll have a lot of fun.
It’s currently at 93% on Rotten Tomatoes and 79 on Metacritic, so if someone is seeing a lot of poor reviews, I don’t know what to say.
I don’t think it is a spoiler to say that it is going to be hard to integrate this hero into the current DCU (though that was what I thought about Antman), but:
At the end, and in the credits, it appears maybe they are going to try.
I just watched a spoiler free review for the movie that was very positive. I’m very excited to see it.
I haven’t looked at a comic book since 1965, and don’t care for most films based on them. But having sat through the original Captain Marvel serials in the mid-50’s, and remembering how flat-out dumb they were (even to an eight-year old), I find myself enjoying the Shazam trailer and hope it works. It may be hard for them to hit the right amount of humor when the source material is over the top silly to begin with.
There were a few episodes of the JUSTICE LEAGUE animated series that did a pretty good job of integrating Cap into the DCU, I thought…he was portrayed as a big lovable mutt with the sensibility of a 13-year-old, or however old the original Billy Batson was supposed to be.
Batman: “What’s up with the Boy Scout?”
Superman: “I thought I was the Boy Scout.”
Batman: “That was before I met him.”
I am also looking forward to this, having bought the first DC issue of Shazam! when it was published back in 1972 or whatever, well past my original comic-reading days, and having enjoyed all the reprints of the original strips that DC made available.
How did Sivana manage to give himself superpowers? I don’t remember him ever able to handle that in the comic books, although he figured out (using higher mathematics, one thing I LOVED Sivana for) how to endow his children with them, when they shouted “Sivana!”
I am a fan of the series I mict see it.
I saw the “Early Access” sneak peek last night in a large packed theater and everyone seemed to enjoy the hell out of themselves. Lots of laughs, gasps (of delight or surprise) and clapping at key parts and the ending. It’s going to be a hit. It’s nice that the trailer keeps a lot of great secrets. I can’t wait to see this again. Like most of the comic book/superhero movies I love (which is, admittedly, pretty much all of them) I know I’ll see this multiple times.
He’s brought to The Wizard Shazam’s (Djimon Hounsou) lair as a child but isn’t pure of heart enough to take over Shazam’s powers and gets kicked out. He spends the next several decades trying to figure out how get back there and when he does he steals powers from the weakened Shazam. Something like that. He’s basically a bad guy out of spite. Mark Strong is great.
I also saw the early access. It was better than I expected, though the tone was a little strange - some very dark scenes, and lots of lighter ones. The crowd was great - people clapping and cheering, and really enjoying the movie. That was awesome!
I know this is an old thread but me and my family watched this on HBO Max tonight and I expected very little. What a pleasant surprise. Zachary Levi as Shazam may be one of the most perfectly cast superhero’s ever. He was about perfect and extremely believable. Yeah the story was kind of meh, most origin hero movies are, but boy did he knock it out of the park. Can’t say enough about his delivery.
Anyway, didn’t want to start a whole new thread just to say this so there you go!
(ETA: This is totally the DC unverse’s Antman movie)
I’d agree with that statement. A mostly forgettable, but fun movie driven entirely by good casting. Nobody was asking for “Antman starring Paul Rudd,” but it worked for what it was.
