Recently, I asked for some advice on interviewing on behalf of Mrs. Small. Apparently, her interviewers were impressed, as we got a phone call on Friday from one of the references she used. They had called and asked about her a good bit, and expressed interest. Fast forward…
Monday morning - 9:30 - I’m getting ready to leave for the university. Phone rings. She answers, smiles, and says yes. They called to offer her the job. It pays slightly more than we expected and comes with a huge amount of vacation time (several weeks - which is nice). They want her to start by the end of the month. No problems there. We’re glad to be working our way back home. Then she got off the phone. The first thing we did was discuss housing.
We found a house near the job that is rather perfect. Actually, it is imperfect, but wouldn’t take much work to become nice. It is also rather affordable for us. Tomorrow morning I go back to the bank to discuss the loan. Of course, once we are out of our apartment, we will be in my parents guest room until we get the house or find somewhere new to go. All our furniture is wandering into storage for a few weeks, and we’re already boxing up items to take on the move.
I’m excited. Sure, it’s a bit of driving. I will commute for November and December for 5 days a week, about an hour each way. Then in January I will start spring semester and go until early May. I should be done at that point, so the commuting will end. We’re also kind of worried about moving back. Buying is a rough option - we’ve never owned before, and we are a little overwhelmed by it all. According to the bank, the house should cost us 600(ish) a month. Rent there is at least the same, if not higher, plus utilities. We figure we’ll attempt to buy, but if it doesn’t work out, rent until something becomes available.
Wish us luck! It’ll be a busy few weeks, and I’m still somewhat scared, but we should be settled somewhere by mid-November and I will be back to posting as many times as possible.
Good for Mrs. Smalls, congrats on her new job! I hope she enjoys it. Also good luck to both of you (and the small Smalls) in getting your lives together in the new place. Hopefully the little imperfections can be smoothed out quickly.
Thanks everyone. Reepicheep - I think the small imperfections will be okay, once the largest one is taken care of. Who has a house with all unfinished wood floors? Well, these people. Looks like that will be order of business #1 once (if) we get the house.
Captain_C - so far she doesn’t seem to concerned. Security Management doesn’t sound all that bad, other than the $130 book. I think she found it on half.com for about 75 (hint, hint). She is worried about the final in this class though, since it is soon and she can’t start on it yet. She talked today about how nice it would be to be finished. She doesn’t have long, just until August. Then, hopefully, we can get rid of all those darn books…
I’m glad we’re moving for the sake of uncluttering. Our house is full of junk. I’ve got boxes (well, one large box) of books and junk that can be given away or sold, but I kept it in the basement for months anyway. Maybe this will force us into giving up the junk…
Slight bump to celebrate longer! I started boxing up things at my house again for today, and I just got off the phone with the loan agent about the house. So far, things are looking okay. She’s supposed to call me back in a few minutes. Wow…
I’m nervous, and I still feel a little overwhelmed. We contacted a friend who is an inspector - he was hoping to look at the house with us on Friday. Now we just have to contact the realty place and make sure someone will be there that day.
Mrs. Small wrote up her letter of resignation for her current job, and is turning it in today. I haven’t told my employer yet, but I will on Thursday morning. Well, I will talk to some people at work on Wednesday night when I get there, but I will see my boss in the morning. There was a great job posted in the paper up there in the last few days, so I’m polishing up the old resume in hopes that I can be more than a commuting student.
This is all so exciting! It’s almost too much to take in at once! I’m glad she did well on the interview, since I know you were both nervous. And a new house! ::vicariously living through you
I hope so as well. I hate this sitting around and waiting on the call from people. Darn loan lady…
The good news is, if we get the house, payments should be about $100 less than originally expected. It does need a lot of work though. I think most things will have to wait until spring, but a few need to be done before we move in. Storage space, here we come!
Thank you Kytheria. I can’t throw tomatoes too well so I think you’re in the clear…
We’re still looking into housing. It may end up cheaper to get an apartment and wait for the house buying part until I’m done commuting back and forth. That way I can get more income instead of spending it all on gasoline. Of course, I don’t know much for sure about either way yet, since we just heard about it yesterday.
