I read a while ago that the great poet/songwriter/cartoonist Shel Silverstein grew up in the Logan Square area (specifically Palmer Square on Palmer Street according to the Poetry Foundation, etc). I am baffled that there’s no visible acknowledgement of Silverstein in the neighborhood.
I grew up with Silverstein’s poetry as I’m sure many of you have, and he wrote “A Boy Named Sue,” for goodness sakes! He’s kind of a big deal, but then again, Chicago is a historic city that has seen lots of “big deals” come and go.
Is there any type of memorial honoring him in Logan Square? Have I missed it? What was his address? Anybody have any clue or know where I could go to find out?
I would like to take a look at the 1940 Census records - a name and a street should be enough to find his address - I found my grandparents’ records this way - but the gov’t shut down means I’ll have to wait on that.
