Shelby Cobra sells for $5.5 million

Link.

This is a world’s record price for an American car.

I like the Cobra. It’s a very attractive car, and a performer. But having an occasional glance at prices over the years, I’ve always been amazed at how much they fetch.

My girlfriend and I watched the auction last night and were astounded at the prices being bid.

Did you see the two 1954 Dodge Fire Arrow concept cars? How about the Russian turbocharged airboat?

For car nuts who are into high-powered, totally extravagant, utterly useless but incredibly amazing cars, this is like owning a piece of Jesus’ cross. The car was owned by the man. Even his flops are spoken of with respect (Omni GLH, Series 1) because it’s Carroll Shelby. The name cachet alone was worth $2 million on this car.

I don’t believe that this part of the article is correct

The car was trashed, but was bought by some bloke in England who had it restored, converted to righthand drive, and ditched one of the superchargers. It’s possible that it could have been destroyed since then, but I haven’t heard any screams of anguish loud enough to convince me of that.

I bet when Shelby goes to that great race track in the sky, the car will go on the block shortly afterwards and sell for a jillion.

Oh, if Shelby’s Cobra is out of your price range, check out this fix’er upper 'cuda for a mere $771K!

I’m guessin’ that’s the car Cosby talked about on the album “200 MPH”? The one that Cos said “went around the tree three times” when he put it in gear for the first time, before he’d even let off the clutch?

“And I look at the speedometer, and it goes from zero all the way around to two hundred M.P.H., and under the 200 there’s still more room, and the words, ‘OH WOW’…”

The guy who bought it also owns a Futurliner, and he lives in the town I went to high school in. I’m gonna have to go hang with him when I’m home the next time. Though I’m kind of surprised anyone with that kind of money would live in that town.
