What the hell is the “gay agenda”? I didn’t know trying to survive was an agenda. That one really bothers me.

It means different things to different homophobes, some believe the agenda is using the media to make homosexuality seem normal and ok, others go nuttier and believe it involves recruiting and transforming straight kids and teens into gays.:rolleyes:

Regarding the “choice”: I had a co-worker who side-stepped this with the statement that you are not homosexual based on what your desires are. You are homosexual based on what you do. Therefore, it didn’t matter that God made someone with same-sex preferences, the “sin” was acting on those preferences. God’s plan was for you to sexually frustrated and celibate.
Is it really fair to speculate, considering he says he is not gay? I get that he is effeminate, and seems overly preoccupied with homosexuality, but I think people would be better served showing him the respect you’d hope he’d show others. If the goal is to dismiss restrictive gender norms that can be used as weapons against gays, doesn’t it hurt the cause to continually intimate that a married man who claims to be straight is gay?
I think people wouldn’t be laughing at him if he hadn’t made it his career to “cure” the gayness. That puts him squarely in the “he’s a fool, so let’s throw eggs at him” camp.
Though I admit it does bug me when effeminate men are automatically pegged as gay, because this only caricaturizes and stereotypes homosexuality.
^This, no one is out there hunting for effeminate married men to out. But they’re not going to let it pass when hes doing what he is doing.
OK – I get the fun task of trying to relate a viewpoint I don’t totally agree with but one I understand. And if you want to rip me one for it I can always find a shoulder to cry on down the GLCC. (And no I am not gay but because of friends and relatives I’ve been in the fight for equal rights since about forever)
The “evidence” of “choice” is ofter the 300 pound killer Aryan in prison for life having gay sex as a “top” or as a rapist and considering himself perfectly straight. Gets out on parole and never does (or at least doesn’t get caught) same-sex again. AHA!!! yells the Religious Far-right SEE??? It’s all about choice and it can be cured and never happen again!
Second scenerio, and many of us can think of at least one person we’ve met who fits it, is the straight who goes gay or bi for a while basically to piss off the family. Flunking out of college didn’t do it, drugs didn’t do it, so lets try this. Beyond “curious” they want to be “super gay” and do so for a few months just until the trust fund sets in and they go back to their former lives. And appear on Jerry Springer telling how horrible they were and thanking God they were cured.
I don’t like it but that one in 10,000 is all some homophobe needs.
It’s your second point that highlights the problem for me. It’s likely nobody would be calling/insinuating he is gay if he were not effeminate. They would just think he’s a bigoted nutjob. I mean, I get it. It’s funny, but it strikes me as wrong for people interested in serious criticism, to engage in name calling that perpetuates the stereotypes they work to fight against.
Secondly, we are all supposed to rise above “throwing eggs at people”, right? If you make the decision to not do that based on subjective criteria, I don’t think you make too much of a stink when some bullies some “undeserving” person because they don’t like what they do.
There is nothing wrong with interracial relationships or having a mixed race daughter, HOWEVER if you are Strom Thurmond and running on a campaign of racism and limiting civil rights yes I totally endorse outing before you can hurt society more than you already have.

But there is no evidence Marcus Bachmann is gay beyond what people glean from his supposed stereotypically gay behavior; behavior which should not really be associated with homosexuality in the first place. This isn’t like Ted Haggard, where there are people claiming they slept with him, or even like Larry Craig. Your analogy doesn’t hold for that reason.
