I’ve been listening to track ten on the CD Flow, River of my Soul by Single Gun Theory by for half a year now, I can’t get enough of it. There’s something about the mix of an angst-ridden love song plus new-age spiritual affirmations and children singing.
The spiritual messages they insert are optimistic, cheerful, lending guidance and mixing physics theories, clearly from an affirmations tape or something. It seemed like really sly cynicism, given the context of the lyrics.
I just put it in my computer today and found out that the song is called “Thetan”. I feel like a complete goof for being drawn in by Scientology rhetoric, but those messages were really uplifting, damnit! And they don’t sound like Dianetics/Scientology, they sound exactly like the mumbo-jumbo in any self-helf book I’ve ever flipped through. That in itself is kind of frightening.
Now I don’t know what to make of the song. Is it pro-Scientology propaganda? Is it ridiculing them in a sophisticated manner? The lyrics could swing either way, and I don’t know enough about the band to figure it out.
This is driving me nuts. I want to respect the band, but if it’s overtly pro-Scientology… dangit, ignorance is bliss.
