What moment has caused you to shudder, turn away, or worse. Something that really suprised you with its horror, violence, suprise, or terror. Give as few or as many details as you feel neccesary to get your point across.
For me a very shocking moment was the scene in American History X, when Edward Norton Jr.'s character makes one of the black characters that has come to his house eat the curb, then he proceeds to completely smash his head in. The first time I saw it, I had to turn away. It was such a violent scene, and it was full of hate. It will be something I will never forget.
The revelation in The Crying Game was probably the biggest shock I can remember. If you haven’t seen it, there’s no point in telling it. If you have seen it, you don’t need to be reminded.
The entire final act from Audition is not what most people expect and is incredibly creepy and effective.
There are several sequences in Happiness, all involving only dialogue, which are creepy as hell and very nearly had me reaching for the remote control to switch it off.
In general, most things involving medical operations have me covering my eyes. There is a liposuction scene in The Girl Next Door which I normally turn away from when I watch the movie.
The scene in Miller’s Crossing with Tommy, Jonny Caspar, The Dane, and that boxer guy in Caspar’s office. Completely freaked my shit out. It’s still one of my favorite scenes in any movie and another example of how adeptly that movie shifted between comedy, suspense, action, and horror.
When Lila Crane turns the chair around in the basement at the end of Psycho and of course, when her sister, Marion met her unfortunate end earlier in the same movie.
I haven’t seen the movie in years, but in Where Eagles Dare, there’s a fight on a gondola in which a pickaxe type thing gets buried in a guy’s shoulder. It’s probably not as gruesome as I am remembering, but it sure freaked me out when I was 10 years old.
interjection of useless information: When the scene was shot the only actor who knew what was about to happen was JH and all of the filmed reactions are “real”
Oops. The scene in ‘Carrie’ with the you know what coming out of you know where. I saw it in first release in the theater (full house) and everybody shod their pants. First time it had been done in a while I guess but very effective.
An old one: Alan Arkin jumping out of the dark at blind Audrey Hepburn in “Wait Until Dark”, one of the first movies to use the “OhmanIthoughthewasdeadshitthatscaredme” tactics.
It takes a lot to really scare or shock me. SPOILERs ahead.
The scene in which Edward Norton brutally beats the young blond guy in Fight Club made me wince and turn my head away in disgust. I think it was meant to do that.
The scene in The Rapture in which Mimi Rogers shoots her kids shocked the hell out of me, and made me turn off the movie. I’ve never seen the end of it, nor do I want to.
The scene in Jude in which the young son kills his siblings in their sleep because “we are too many” (something his father said and he repeated) shocked and saddened me beyond words.
The scene in Session 9 in which we finally find out what the main character did to his wife and child (or at least, we hear it) disturbed me quite a bit.
In fact, pretty much any scene in which kids are killed brutally, violently, or suddenly is pretty much guaranteed to get to me, especially if I didn’t see it coming.
In “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” the scene where Leatherface hits the guy over the head with a hammer and while he’s draggin’ the guy away his feet are drumming on the floor… you never see the hammer hit the guy… or what happens to his head… but those drumming feet stick with me… also the scene in “Saving Private Ryan” where the soldier is stumbling around looking for his arm… or when the medic stops the guys bleeding right before he gets shot in the head… I’m sure I’ll think of more…
