Post moments in films that almost (or did) cause you to soil your underpants.
From Lord of the Rings, I think I only need to say two words and people will know what I mean - Bilbo, Rivendel.
There’s a moment in the new batman where the Joker raises his voice (in one of his home video tortures) I can’t remember what he said, but the tone of voice was quite impressively scary.
Another scene where Peter Jackson should have relied on his actors instead of using a special effect.
I don’t startle easily, but sometimes they get me. I was watching the Spanish movie REC; there’s a scene very near the end in which a handheld camera is held up in an attic opening and panned around . . . even though I was anticipating what I’d see (like anybody who’s ever seen a movie would have) it still got to me.
That scene in The Descent where what’s-her-face pans the handheld camera around in the cave and suddenly there’s a flesh-eating mutant ambling up behind her friends.
“Wait Until Dark” is a great flick! Kindasorta similar: “When a Stranger Calls.” Carol Kane thinks the killer is in the house, tries to wake her husband, only to discover the killer is in bed with her.
No, no, didn’t scare me a bit.

One that I’d like to mention is from Beowulf. When the screen is slowly panning out, and then all of a sudden, zooms in on Grendel while he is screaming. I was so not expecting that in that movie.
Oh, another good one is from Saw. When the guy is in the dark apartment and can only see by intermittently taking flash photos. When he takes one and it shows…hell, I don’t even remember what. Something that I’ve blocked out I guess. Whatever it was, it scared the crap out of everyone.
Blind Audrey Hepburn is pursued throughout her apartment by an incredibly evil Alan Arkin. To even the odds, she breaks every light bulb in the place, so that much of the chase takes place in total darkness (not just Hollywood darkness). Eventually he opens the refrigerator door, lighting the room enough to find her.
After a prolonged struggle, she stabs him, and he collapses. Just as she is about to leave the room, he leaps at her. The leap is totally unexpected, and totally shocking.
The “killer’s not really dead” bit has been done quite often since, but never anywhere near as effectively.
Actually, that Bravo series really disappointed me because it listed whole movies instead of just scenes. Here is a much better list, complete with a handful of youtube clips, listing just the scenes. It’s cool in that, while most of the scenes come from horor movies, a lot of them come from non-horror movies. And BTW, #1 on the list was just kind-of “Meh” for me.
