Movie scene that freaked you out the most?

Not necessarily the grossest or goriest piece of filmmaking you’ve ever seen, just the one that had you saying WTF (in a bad way) or even years later has you saying “EWWWWW!!!” or gives you the chills.
<spoiler space>

My big two:

  1. Hannibal. Ray Liotta eating HIS OWN brain.
  2. Final Destination. Never saw the bus coming.

The Exorcist III. The Hospital Scene. Saw it in the theater and holy fuckin hell did I jump.

Exorcist. The “fuck me Jesus” section. I was 14 or so. Boy. That felt. . . wrong.

Silence of the Lambs when the killer was dancing around in candleight in the skin cape.

The mom getting electrocuted at the very beginning of The Believers. Worse even than the spider eggs hatching in the woman’s face from later on in the same movie.

The “Sloth” scene in “Se7en.”

The unmasking scene in “The Witches.” Saw it when I was a kid, and it still skeeves me to this day, even though I am at the point where I can actually watch it now.

I’m very sensitive and easily disturbed, so I avoid horror movies and anything that I know in advance will bother. I’m glad I watched Trainspotting a couple of years ago- I thought the movie was brilliant, but that dead baby still haunts me. Also the beginning scene of the same movie (toilet-diving) had me gagging and freaking out, too.

This one actually ran on TV when I was a kid in the early 1960s. You’d never get away with that today.

The Horror Chamber of Dr, Faustus (“Les Yeux Sans Visage” = “Eyes Without a Face” in the original French)

Amoral doctor effectively kidnaps young women and takes the skin from their faces to graft onto that of his daughter, who had a terrible accident and apparently keeps rejecting the transplants. They show a scene of one such operation in loving detail, with the doctor slowly and deliberately marking ovals around the eyes and mouth, then cutting along those lines. Then he takes the skin by the two sides and pulls iy from the face directly into the camera. Freaked me out.

The rape scene in The Accused. I saw it with a friend and we were both speechless after that movie.

Bingo. I’d read - perhaps here - that Jodie Foster doesn’t even remember what happened in the filming of the scene, and that the male actors who were her attackers ended up spending time with her afterwards where they comforted each other.

Jaws

I had never been to an ocean up to this point in my life, and I was just about to go to the beach for the first time ever, when I saw this movie.

The first girl being chomped on actually made me put down my popcorn, it doesn’t get any worse than that.

This was almost 20 years ago, and I came midway into the movie on a hotel channel. Dunno if is was HBO, The Movie Channel, or what. I have absolutely no idea what the movie was.

But…there is a hired killer taking on this innocent guy. With a knife. They struggle, fight, and the innocent guy winds up on the floor with the killer straddling him, forcing a knife closer and closer to the victim.

Well, you know how these things end, only it didn’t. The killer keeps telling the victim to “relax, don’t fight it…” while the knife is forced closer and closer to the vic’s abdomen.

Until it penetrates, and gets forced all the way to the hilt. All the time, the killer is saying, “There, there, now…ah, now, it’s all over…” While the victim dies.

Skeezed me out totally and I can nto get that scene out of my head to this day. If the killer hadn’t been so…whatever, trying to soothe the victim while he slowly murdered him…with a KNIFE…maybe I wouldn’t have felt that way.

Sorry, I can’t name the movie. But damn! Until now, I have went almost 2 years without thinking of that scene.

Dang you anyway.

I think that scene is from Saving Private Ryan.

The rape scene in A Clockwork Orange. I had no idea what the film was about - popped it in the VCR one snow-bound afternoon, no body home but me and my (tiny) kids. I was taken completely off guard. For some reason it really freaked me out.

I watched Angelheart at home, alone, on a rainy night.

I’m hiding behind the pillows on the couch, rocking back and forth and whimpering, as Louis Cyphere finally reveals all to Harry Angel.

The opening scene of American History X when Derek, Edward Norton’s character, makes the black man that broke into his house bite the curb right before stomping his head. I literally jumped back a foot or two when I saw that.

In The Devil’s Backbone, when the young woman is following her lover and his friends away from the orphanage, and they’re on the road, and she hugs him, and . . . and . . . it was worse than the ghost and the cistern and the one-legged woman and the whole war thing. It’s not even a gory scene, it’s just shattering.

Betrayal freaks me out more than anything.

20 years ago? Anyway I think in the scene in Ryan, he’s speaking in German, isn’t he?

Though that is a very similar scene.

Khan. Spock.

I fucking still get choked up when he asks “What do you think of my solution?”

I am surprised I am the first person to mention this one. The scene in Misery with the sledgehammer. I really can’t even write the rest. It freaked me out so badly I turned the TV off immediately (the movie was on HBO or something) and could not go to sleep for probably 4 hours after that. I still will never watch that movie again.
