Shoot, why'd ya go and close the "Describe it in three words" thread?

http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=403490&page=1&pp=50

Just closed by SkipMagic, durnburnit. Too soon, says I. That was a fun thread, and quite a few people were still regularly posting in it. :frowning:

Mod Note:
Thirty-one pages is quite a bit for a game. And since we have a surplus of games going on in MPSIMS, I’m afraid we’ll be closing some of the older, longer game threads.

Isn’t 31 pages simply a reflection of its popularity? Who says there’s a “surplus”? Why close it down?

Since this is a thread questioning a mod decision, I’ve moved it to the Pit.

As for why I closed it… we purposely limit the number of on-going game threads because they aren’t central to the mission of the board. Yes, I know, neither are a lot of other threads, but game threads (especially ones without a specific end) aren’t even central to the purpose of MPSIMS. We currently allow a few at a time because they are popular, but when they reach a lot of pages (typically double-digits) and start hogging the front page real estate of MPSIMS, they tend to get closed. We even have a sticky in MPSIMS addressing this issue.

Too Much Traffic.

He closed the song lyrics thread, too. I guess we were having too much fun.

The Music Died.

He also closed the Family Feud thread. I don’t play in any of those. I’m just pointing out the games that were closed since that seems to be the theme of this thread.

Well, shit. I was having fun in the FF thread. This sucks mightily.

Too popular? You mean you actually prefer unpopular threads?

Hey, we weren’t finished yet. There are lots of words we didn’t use yet!

Never ending thread.

Songs sung blue

Or

Screw you Skipper.
ETA: I guess I must be the one responsible for the closing of the Song thread as Skip did link to the thread about post count padding and I had started to increase my post count dramatically by playing this ‘game’ over the past week. Way to go Skip. :frowning:

Yeah,me too.

Guess the Blue team wins.

Red was ahead at the close of the thread.

WE won, dammit. :stuck_out_tongue:

In a way, I am relieved. I needed someone else to step up and take over the hosting duties of the Family Feud thread soon anyway. It was fun while it lasted. I am glad **Idle Thoughts ** had started it.

Skip, one minor note, we were in the middle of a game, but at least you let us complete a round.

Jim

Well, I’m still annoyed. I may wait a week and start another “Describe it in three words” thread.

I have to say- I don’t have a dog in this fight, but the logic of closing a popular, fun thread completely escapes me. A new one will probably be opened with the same game in no time. I understand “hogging front page real estate” and you don’t want the same 5 threads at the top of the page forever, but hell, that might be why a lot of people are visiting that forum to begin with. I dunno. It just seems really weird to me.

I really to think there should have been a “games” forum added when the boards were changed around years back. It would have been a great place for people to discuss WOW, board games, and play games like this without crowding out people in MPSIMS.

My understanding is they tolerate the game threads and have no wish to encourage them. Perhaps I am wrong, but that is my strong impression from the stated rules and way they close game threads from time to time.

I am curious, why did the Werewolf/Mafia games escape the Lock?
Is there some sort of criteria of what is too mundane?
I would think the Family Feud thread actually had some educational value, I can’t speak to the others.
