Has anyone seen the trailer for shooter with Mark Wahlberg? I have to admitt when I first heard the name of the movie I thought of Robin Thicke’s song Shooter but the too have nothing to do with each other…well actually they do but the trailer looks pretty good! yall should check it out!
I’ve always like Wahlberg and hope that he’ll show as good judgment in material in his future lead roles as he has in his recent supporting turns.
Yes he really has done a phenominal job with his film choices and his acting abilities. I watched the trailer for this and I was very impressed with him!
Having read the book it’s based on, Point of Impact by Stephen Hunter, I have grave doubts this movie will do it justice.
I have not read the book. From my experience I have noticed that when books go to movies they generally have plot changes. I am sure they will have several similarities but I am guessing that the changes will be great! The trailer is good I know I am looking forward to it. Maybe I will check the book out after I see the movie!
Not sure about the movie, but this seems like a fine place to plug the book, Point of Impact, which may be the best pure thriller I’ve ever read.
Well the movie looks good to me. Looks like it will be filled with action. I believe the movie is based off the book Point of impact. After I see this movie I guess I really should read the book.
Was the book written in the first-person?
Not sure! Has anyone heard about the Shooter Mashup contest? You create your own shooter trailer at Eyespot.com and you win Xbox 360 stuff! I believe one of the prizes are some of the top Shooting games. Its kind of neat how they did that!
Point of Impact is one of my favorite thriller novels. I’m having a hard time seeing how they can capture the flavor of the book, but if they do it’ll be a great movie.
Mine, too. When the preview came on I literally did a double take when among the first words spoken was “Bob Swagger.” I’m alternating between fear and hope about how the movie will turn out. One thing they would have to change or leave out because it breaks one of the most iron-bound rules of movie making:Don’t kill the dog.And to answer Bryan Elker’s question, the novel is not in first person.
But they do. One of the movie trailers has Walberg saying, “They killed my dog”. That was the first thing that gave me hope that the film might actually try to capture Bob Lee Swagger properly, because he was by far the most interesting thing about the book. Just an awesome character.
One of the things that makes me think it will be hard to really capture the essense of the book in a movie is that the book was written with a heavy narrative. Stephen Hunter wrote excellent expository passages informing us of Swagger’s motivations and the nature of the forces at play.
This book must be really good! you all are making me really want to check it out. I will definaltly have to pick it up after I check out the movie. The character Swagger sounds lik he has a lot of depth. I am sure Wahlberg will pull it off well.
Well, I saw the movie this afternoon. Not as good as I’d hoped, not as bad as I’d feared.
As in all novel to movie translations, lots of subplots were eliminated, chief among them Nick Memphis’ paralyzed wife and how she got that way. And I don’t think ‘Bob the Nailer’ passed anybody’s lips.
Locations were changed, Phillie substituting for New Orleans and Montana for Arkansas. I’m not sure the real Big Easy is ready to host a movie shoot after Katrina and I see for the locations a couple in BC – at least they didn’t try to pass off western snow-capped peaks for the Ouachitas.
Biggest change, and most of my disappointment were the explosions. The book Swagger simply shot (a lot of) people. The movie Swagger is an expert at rigging up IEDs so there are a lot of three story high fireballs spaced throughout. Oh, well. That’s Hollywood for you.
I thought the coolest part was where he made camoflage by spray painting the rifle with leaves in front of it.
I saw the movie the day it came out. Hunter is one of my favorite authors. The movie was good, not as good as the book, but it was still a fun movie. It’s been a few years since I’ve read the book, but it seems they merged Black Light into the movie as well. I think they could have done a little bit better with it, but over all not a bad movie.
I just watched the DVD of Shooter, and want to resurrect this thread to make one comment. Although the acting was vastly better, it seemed no different than the Rambo movies. One man takes on the entire world and wins. Yeah.
