S H O O T E R is awesome

You all know me as a movie snob (three of my lifetime topten movies are silents), but I’m not (another one is Showgirls). As further proof of this . . .

I watched *Shooter *last night (it comes out Tuesday) and loved it. As the wise man said, 90% of everything is crap. This is certainly as true about macho action flicks as about any other genre or medium. But occasionally a movie comes along–Con Air, The Rock, Under Siege–that proves the rule by representing that (probably overgenerous) 10%.

*Shooter *is preposterous and brilliant, and a holler and a hoot from beginning to end. Absolutely none of it is remotely believable, and the script is a nearly unbroken string of “quotable” oneliners, but it’s quite possibly my favorite American movie of the year so far.

[I have little doubt that some of those preposterous unbelievables will be subject to polite debate. Please use spoiler tags.]

Sight unseen and without the slightest hint of cruelty, might you be developing some kind of crush on Marky Mark? I know I am. As an unabashed heterosexual, he’s about a quarter-Clooney. Heck, with his skills, he even made The Departed OK.

To quote another great movie: “Sometimes there’s a man.” That’s Mark Wahlberg. The Jeff Lebowski of our time.

Been there, done that. Over him like 10 years ago.

He’s more of a testosteriffic Bruce Willis in Shooter.

Yippie ki yay motherscratcher. I’ll put it in my queue.

You’re killing me with thread titles like this. As a huge Kate Mara fan, I cannot wait to see this. When I finally do, I’ll come to the SDMB and do a title search to see if there are any threads on it, and this one won’t appear.

Not sure if you started the A P O C A L Y P T O S U C K S thread or it was someone else, but that one annoyed me for the same reason.

Just sayin’.

Never thought of that. Guess you’ll just have to search with spaces.

hehheh.

(I’m interpreting the emoticon to mean that you understand that doesn’t work.)

The book wasn’t bad either. A straightforward thriller, but reasonably well written.

I enjoyed the movie, though the book was better. I think they used a couple of books tied together to make the movie which make it a bit worse IMO. I hope they make a couple of more of the books into movies, they are fun thrillers.

OK, I’ll give it a try. I need something to watch while I’m exercising.

I’m a midsized fan of action movies, liking some goofy ones (Once Upon a Time in Mexico, or The Avengers, e.g.) as well as some great ones (Heat, e.g.). I’ve not seen Shooter, but if it’s in the same category as Con Air or (shudder) The Rock, I think I’ll pass :).

The spaced title thing is annoying. Contributors of supposedly copyrighted old clips to YouTube have started doing that in response to YT yanking all the good stuff.

I also liked the movie. Good popcorn munching stuff. High art? Not likely. Lots of stuff blowing up? Yep. I did like the little “get out of jail free” reveal at the end. Thought that showed a lot about how the character thinks.

I read the book, and I’m looking forward to seeing the movie.

Actually I’m curious about that too (maybe this is a question for About This Message Board), but what are you trying to convey with spaced-out letters?

I understand that the all-caps is SHOUTING the title, but what do the spaces do? Is it supposed to be a long drawn out scream?

That can’t be it. In spaces, no one can hear you scream.

 Wow, man. Props.

Post of the year.

Up to now, yes. A standing ovation, bravo, and like that. On the other hand, we aren’t even to the All-Star break. It’s too early to pick post of the year.
