The story has been picked up and confirmed by pretty much every media outlet in Canada, across the entire political spectrum. The Toronto Star isn’t some right wing tabloid.
Where? Can you give links?
It literally is a right-leaning tabloid, though not like the National Enquirer or anything (they do have real journalism mixed with their sensationalist stuff). But I didn’t see them independently confirming it.
People have asked many times for something and there hasn’t been shit. If you’re sitting on anything please share. I can’t find it, and I’ve tried. Help us out please!
I have no dog in this fight (as to whether it’s true or not, I do care about the messaging), I just want to know the truth.
Please pay more attention. You are presumably referring to the Toronto Sun. The Toronto Star is a broadsheet, not a tabloid, and is openly liberal.
(Among other hits)
The Star would never in ten billion years carry anything about this without confirming it. It is a very, very careful and reputable newspaper.
Sure, but on this very board we don’t let them get away with claiming such inferences are anything more than mere speculation if they’re not supported by any verified facts. If they go on repeating their speculations for weeks at a time with no new data to back them up, we call them out on their persistent embrace of ignorance.
In a just world, this is true. In the world we live in, it is not true. People who hate transpeople will use every instance of transperson misbehavior to create more animosity for the trans community. It just makes it harder to get people to support trans rights.
If this were a cis woman modifying herself and presenting inappropriately, the pictures wouldn’t ever be used to suggest that cis women shouldn’t be allowed near our children.
RickJay isn’t presenting much else, either.
This is one reason why this situation should be discussed even if there is scant information. No matter the underlying facts, this story is spreading around the world. I’ve seen these pictures in other forums on the internet under things like “Funny Pictures”. I’ve seen it on social media. Regardless of whether it’s right or wrong, this situation is shaping people’s opinions around transgender people.
Regardless of the situation, I think it has been handled poorly from a trans rights perspective by the school and the teacher. As has been mentioned, there has been little additional information to clear up the situation. This allows the rumors to spread like wildfire along with whatever mis-impressions people create from the story. If the teacher or the school thought this would be no big deal in today’s viral internet world, they are very naive. My impression is that this is overall harming trans rights and the perception of transgender people. The school and teacher certainly don’t have any obligation to clear things up, but we can’t all just say we wish it wasn’t a topic of discussion and leave it at that. It is a topic of discussion whether or not we want it to be.
The school probably can’t do anything, due to privacy concerns. I think you’re putting too much of a burden on the teacher to make her responsible for the impression people have of trans people worldwide.
If it weren’t for transphobic bigots, this wouldn’t be a story at all and those pictures wouldn’t be circulating at all. Your post seems to excuse the cause of all of this.
Cites? I haven’t seen anything on any mainstream media. And no, I don’t consider the Toronto Star mainstream.
The story has been in the Toronto Sun and the more credible Toronto Star and The Globe and Mail. I have no idea what other news and media has featured it. But all of the above would be considered mainstream by most Canadians. I will leave it to others to search or post links should they wish.
Someone please PM me if anyone of the despicable transphobes in this thread ever comes around to see the error of their ways. Otherwise, I’ll keep this thread on mute and those posters on ignore.
There should be no platform for bigots.
The Toronto Star is not what you appear to think it is. Perhaps look into it a little more.
From Media Bias Fact Check website:
- Overall, we rate the Toronto Star Left-Center biased based on editorial positions that favor the left and High for factual reporting due to proper sourcing.
I haven’t presented any “anti-trans” or “right wing” sources.
Please, for the love of all that is holy, pay attention to what people are typing.
The Toronto Star is the most mainstream and reliable news source you can possibly imagine. The Toronto STAR is not the Toronto SUN. I know those are both astronomical objects but they are not the same newspaper. I pointed out this distinction three hours before you posted.
No, you just direct everyone to the Toronto Star and make references to some unnamed person who is supposedly acquainted with the subject.
The idea that it’s a hoax is baffling. It was obviously true ever since the first post with all the random photos from random students’ social media. That’s even before the newspaper stuff or someone who lives there vouching for it.
Your guess is as good as mine why this lady wants to do this, but she definitely is.
What was the last actual news, not opinion, released?
More second-hand rumor and speculation. Probably not helpful, but it’s the latest news I can find.
That article appears to be reporting on what people at a protest believe, while doing an extremely careful job of not confirming any aspect of the story.
Everyone in this thread who says they think this story is a hoax is lying, and is just trying to troll poor RickJay (who, it must be said has the patience of a saint!).
Who is that?
