Yep. This article and this thread.
We have chela to thank for that.
Even if it is real, even if it is reported accurately, I wonder why the Right would support it and point to it so vociferously. I can’t help to conclude that it is one extreme isolated example being used as bait to drag us up to the top of an Olympic sized ski jump.
Once we are at the top, they’ll do their level best to kick us down that huge slippery slope towards demonizing and stripping rights away from TG people. And once they’ve got us stripping rights from them, then convincing us to go one step further and strip the rights from all of the LGBTQ+ community. And then after that, one step further and include all immigrants. And then after that, one step further and all POC. And then after that, one step further and all women. And then after that… well ‘Today America; Tomorrow Der World!’
But, if I can manage to think that this whole news story is just one huge HIPAA leak (making it really none of my business) of just one person’s life, I can get back to my life… and to the problems that dangerous groups of Fascists present day to day in America when we are just 48 days away from Midterm Elections.
I think you might well be correct.
I guess it hurts you to think she might like the way she looks so you want it to be fake news. Accept it she likes looking ludicrous.
I am told by an employee of the HDSB that the photos appear to be authentic.
Hell, maybe this is some sort of demonstration AGAINST trans people. Would it be all that impossible for someone to do this specifically to make trans people look bad? Highly unlikely, perhaps, but this is also a country where people sabotage their own lives because they think they’re “Freeman on the land” or ruin their jobs by spending three weeks honking truck horns in downtown Ottawa. Anything is possible.
Why on earth would I accept this story at face value? Unlike you, I’m not a drooling bigot.
There’s something weird going on here. It fits your stupid worldview to read the story uncritically. Not mine.
You’re certainly right. At this point, “who knows” seems to be the answer.
Another question would be “Who cares?” and more specifically “Why should we care?” I think most of us agree the attire as presented is not really appropriate for a high school shop class, but that’s not national news (and national news agencies seem to agree). Sometimes people do weird stuff. Sometimes those people are trans. Is pointing and laughing (or getting outraged) at pictures of people really the best thing we can be spending our time doing online? Is there a reason why this thread exists at all?
I think it’s important to discuss situations like these (even if it was fake) because they are politically polarizing enough to effect change in a negative way. If this happened in a conservative school district, there’s a good chance that conservative voters would be motivated enough to enact a negative change in policy with regards to transgender teachers. That may be through things like exerting political pressure, voting for more conservative school board members, or running for school board themselves. Even if you feel it’s something that should be ignored, you should also recognize that large swaths of people will not ignore it. You need to pay attention in order to counteract the people who would be strongly opposed to it. If you ignore it, then they will steamroll through whatever they want.
That’s a valid point, so I would clarify that “we shouldn’t care” doesn’t mean “we should ignore it” but rather that a properly functioning society shouldn’t find this politically polarizing. Me asking who cares is in fact an argument that it should be dealt with at the lowest level and not turned over to internet pundits. The problem is bigots like Andy Ngo don’t want this dealt with at the school or district level. They want it turned into a big enough polarizing event to be yet another wedge forcing trans people out of society, even when the vast number of trans people aren’t teaching a shop class in pendulous prosthetic boobs.
Band Name!
Or lost a bet.
Just to clarify, this happened in Ontario. Local school boards are administrative bodies, for the most part. Most of the power is held by the provincial government; our education system is much more top-down than some American posters will be accustomed to. School boards do have some policy-making powers, but in cases of how employees are treated - whether it’s an issue of discrimination or rights or more mundane things - most of the decisions are made by the provincial Ministry of Education, either because it’s their policy or because the CBA says what they have to do. There is really not much local that can change about this sort of thing.
I do appreciate that you Pitted yourself for bigotry though. That’s quite enlightened of you.
Bigotry.
And I’m getting ready for another guest!
It doesn’t hurt me, and it’s not about I want. It’s just that there are very, very few people who would voluntarily wear such a ludicrously-large prosthesis, and many, many times more than that number of trolls with access to Photoshop. I’m just commenting on relative likelihood, here, not what “should” be.
I think it’s important to discuss situations like these especially if they’re fake.
In shocking twist #1, here’s an article from an actual news outlet:
And the statement from the school district:
