Should dentistry students be expelled for 'sexually violent', 'misogynistic' posts on Facebook?

If I was associated with the school either as staff or student I’d want them expelled. Why should the university’s reputation suffer? Keeping them on means the school willingoutly associeties with stupid massogonists. Expelling them allows the school to demonstrate people of that caliber are not welcome there. I’d much rather hire a dentist with a degree from a school that has a zero tolerance policy on stupid misogynists.

I don’t understand why there’s any controversy over expelling them from dental school. It’s immediately clear no rational professional body would permit them to be dentists, or even work in any medical field. So what would be the point of graduating them from dental school?

Given that leftfield’s complaint appeared to be about people who don’t understand the right to bear arms, I can’t figure out who was insulting whom either.

This is what I see as well; especially since I tend to think of “hate sex” as a euphemism for rape.

Also – do dental students in Canada work on other students? The public? If so, would any of us want those students to administer laughing gas or IV sedation? I wouldn’t want anyone like that working on me, that’s for sure. If you’re not a woman playing by these guys’ rules, would they under-medicate for pain? Do a less-good job than on a female baker or nanny?

Sure, it might be a private page, but jeezum crow, people, we should all know by now that *nothing *on the internet is private. And Facebook certainly isn’t private, even in its “private” groups, because wherever you have more than 1 person, you have the possibility of someone telling someone else about whatever stupid or threatening thing you’ve said (complete with screen shot).

As a pure matter of nosiness, I am curious to know how the messages got out. A traitor in the group? Someone accidentally leave themselves logged in?

I don’t think “hate sex” or “hate fuck” is a rape euphemism. I think it’s supposed to be having sex with someone you personally loathe, or are currently really angry at. Saying you “would hate fuck someone” basically means “I hate this person, but if they asked I wouldn’t say no.” It doesn’t preclude rape, but doesn’t really imply it either.

I could be wrong, but that’s how I always understood it in context.

Yeah, “hate sex” is not typically a rape thing. It’s angry, it’s aggressive, and it’s generally understood to be consensual. Also: super hot (slightly NSFW). The two parties may hate each other, or just be angry at each other. The trope is basically typified by a more elaborate version of his conversation:

“I hate you!”
“Well I hate you!”
“Fuck me!”
“O-fuckin’-kay!”

“Hate fuck” is a direct reference to the current CBC/Jian Ghomeshi affair. Jian was a very popular CBC radio one program host who was fired a month ago after revelations emerged about his violent sex life and accusations of date rape. He seemingly also created a hostile work place where a former producer reported that he once said that he wanted to “hate fuck” her (SDBM thread cite).

Universities go to great lengths to select a cohort that will provide a lively intellectual community and go on to do things that will bring glory and prestige to the institution. This is the whole point of the admissions process-- to make sure you’ve got a good bunch that you can be proud of. Because that reputation is what a school lives or dies on.

If someone proves that they are not an asset to the organization, it’s totally normal to give them the boot. Just like we kick out failing students. A school that just graduates unsuitable people will quickly find itself undesirable. And it’s all the other students who will pay for that bad reputation when they find people don’t want to hire them.

There are lots of dental schools out there. I’m sure that one that is less concerned about its reputation will take their money.

It’s a rough lesson to learn, but it’s just a reality. With anything connected to your professional life, you don’t want anything down on paper that you wouldn’t want posted in the employee newsletter.

Speaking as a Dal alumni (and former employee), Dal dental students do work on other students, staff and the public. Until recently I’ve had all my pearly whites cleaned at this very school.

I know the term as I explained it predates that incident by a long time, but since they’re in Canada it very well could be a direct reference to that.

Well, assuming they are not expelled, won’t a classmate at some time post graduation bring the matter up again? Will they ever be able to work, assuming some of their colleagues have saved the online material?

I suppose a period of suspension (including required counseling/training in what it take to be a health professional) might help develop a needed sense of maturity in those involved.

I can’t imagine how ticked off I’d be as a fourth-year student to find that everyone’s exams were postponed as a result of these jerks’ stupidity.

Thankfully, my dentist (a nice Slavic woman) is big on conscious sedation.

:D:D:D:smack::smack::smack:

I’m a knucklehead. i had just been reading an article about guns rights before wandering into this thread. Shit was still bouncing around in my head. Good catch, but dammit you know what I meant!!

I think the University has every right to do whatever they feel necessary. I am not going to spoiler their comments:

That’s just one of many, including the hate fuck one, and the chloroform.

Chloroform! And this is a dentist you think I’d be comfortable going to. And possible be knocked out with, if I have any major procedures. Hell, I wouldn’t want to go to him just for the evidence of stupidity by posting all of this shit.

Everybody keeps telling me it’s the new paradigm. Everything is online now, mom, and you just have to deal with it. Well, so do they.

even sven is also right in that universities certainly have a right to pick who they want as alumni.

A rather large percentage of women have sexual desires about being sexual dominated, rape fantasies, etc. This seems more to be immature joking around about this. They’re stupid to do it in public (and even more stupid for mentioning specific individuals) but this is a very common sexual theme and not by itself misogynistic.

Oh, I missed the part where the students were female. That’s different then, because women can make immature jokes about rape without consequences.

Wait. That is entirely not what happened in this situation.

Even before you get to the question of whether these people can be trusted to behave in a professional manner, there’s the fact that they’re bone-stupid enough to post this stuff under their own names – I wouldn’t trust them to find the right end to do a dental rather than a proctological exam.

These remarks speak to the sexual desires (about sexual domination, rape fantasies, etc) of the Facebook group members solely and directly; that is the issue here. Also, many people do find it both misogynistic and punishable. We’ll soon see how the university moves on this.

You don’t seem to be making much sense. Where did I say it was women making the jokes? And why would it make any difference?

It’s not necessarily misogynistic for women to have sexual fantasies about being sexual dominated and it’s not necessarily misogynistic for men to have fantasies about sexual dominating women. It is however stupid to write about it in a forum not dedicated to such topics, and it’s stupid to mention specific individuals.
