Should I be worried? Mail related situation.

Long story short, I had to mail a key to someone because I forgot to leave it at their house after houses itting. They live about 100 blocks south of me (NYC).

I dropped it off at UPS (there’s a UPS in my building, that’s why I didn’t do it through USPS)…just the keys in the envelope essentially. Stupid me, I TOLD the mail guy what was in it, because I was asking him to weigh it for proper postage.

About an hour after I mail it, it dawns on the recipient that I’m mailing her HOUSE KEY in an envelope with HER ADDRESS and the keys have a LABELED KEY RING on them. But it’s too late at that point to do anything. She hasn’t received the keys yet though…I would have assumed that they would have gotten there this afternoon since we’re so close.

I wouldn’t think an employee of UPS would be so stupid as to steal the keys and attempt a break in…I mean they must be well aware that tampering with the mail is a federal offense. And I have a receipt proving that I paid for postage there, so it would be very obviously suspicious if this envelope mysteriously disappeared. But criminals are dumb.

Maybe the UPS is just backed up though and it’ll go out tomorrow?

I’m just very worried…I realize the chances of someone stealing them are astronomically low, but still…

When did you send it, and with what speed of shipping? It sounds like you dropped it off today - you’re not going to get same-day service from UPS. UPS/FedEx/USPS all have to send their items to a processing center for sorting, and then out to their destination.

I put it in the mail around 9:30 this morning for normal delivery. Ok, that makes me feel better…I just wasn’t sure if for something like a regular letter it just got popped on the truck and driven downtown.

Oh, I get it now - a USPS dropoff at a UPS Store. Yeah, it’ll be tomorrow at the earliest, I suspect, maybe even the day after or so. It depends on how quickly the sorters deal with it and put it on another truck to the local office near your friend.

Oh ok. I have no idea if they’re sending it USPS or UPS…I didn’t ask…I do feel better now…I was having visions of a psycho breaking into her apartment and beating her up at night, or coming in the afternoon while she’s at work and traumatizing her elderly cat.

I’m not normally this paranoid and the people at that UPS are perfectly nice and I’m sure they are law abiding citizens. This didn’t even occur to me until she pointed out the key/address thing and then my imagination went into overdrive when it didn’t arrive this afternoon (considering the relatively short distance between where we live- also felt like an idiot because I had gone to her place to personally drop them off but had left ALL my keys in my laptop bag at work and had a minor freakout- d’oh).

Thank you though, you’ve put my mind at ease!
