Bern has long hair, and as she has aged it’s become fine and frizzy. She goes once every 6 - 8 weeks and has her tummy and back legs shaved close. She goes to a professional groomer who works with cats - don’t take your cat to a groomer who simply says “Oh, yeah, I can do that” without telling you they HAVE done that.
The biggest problem Bern has being groomed is the dryer. She HATES the dryer. The second time she went in she managed to unhook the cage latch and tried to escape. Now they know and take extra precautions. Afterwards she acts all miffed and pissy, but she gets over it fast, knowing she can stretch out without the mats and snarls.
Another vote for the Furminator, if you can find a way to get one. Can you mail-order it?
This thing is one of the few products I’ve seen advertised that actually works exactly the way they claim it does. You use it on the cat and eventually you end up with a big pile of fur that’s about the same size as the cat itself, but yet you don’t really see much difference in the level of furriness. It’s because it pulls out a lot of the loose under-fur, leaving the top hairs alone.
My cats love it, btw. One of them comes up to me and nuzzles me whenever I pick it up, and will happily stand still while I Furminate her for as long as I like.
Your kitty is beautiful, btw.
