Having changed everything about my life in the last year, I’ve decided to go ahead and get rid of my low-maintenance haircut for something exciting and cute. I’m trying to choose between getting my hair cut like Kate Winslet here (second photo) and Christina Hendricks in this shot.
They differ not only by the length of the bangs but also in the shape of the cut itself.
My hair is a combo of the sort of looser waves and tighter spirals of the ladies in the pics-curly heads rarely have uniform curl distribution (apparently) and I’m no exception to the rule.
Also, I have to drive out to Chicago for this haircut, since I refuse to trust anyone in my current neighbourhood (5 years in L.A. has totally spoiled me) and got a rec for a stylist who’s a friend of a friend from law school. She works at an upscale salon in Chicago. I emailed her the photographs and she said that since my hair grows slowly and I’m about to face a pretty challenging recruiting season that I ought to seriously consider the length of my bangs and what I’d be happy with. I’m thinking that I may compromise with the Hendricks haircut since I’ve had quasi-versions of the Winslet haircut, but lengthening the bangs till I figure out how much I like bangs.
For the record, this is what I look like (my hair is straightened here, but at least it makes my face shape clear). small shot of me
I’m pretty excited…I’ve had the same haircut for something like a decade.
Speaking as a fellow brown person, I dunno if the Hendricks will work for you, unless you have thinner hair, more like a white person hair. I’m only half brown, and I couldn’t pull it off, just based on the sheer thickness of my hair, which is thinner than my Indian cousins but substantially thicker than a white person’s (my Jewish friends aside). When was the last time you saw Indian hair “tousled” like Hendrick’s, without being frizzy?
Personally, I think a small bob and a keratin-straightening would be awesome on you. Lower maintenance too. Or the daily tousled look of Winslet - but would you want to manage it daily like hers?
I would agree with Cat Fight, especially the Kate Winslet one involves a lot of styling to look like that, rather than a hair cut which would fall that way naturally. Both appear to be relatively straight cuts (the Kate one with a few more layers to break it up a little), with the fringe.
So if you are feeling cautious about the cut and your hair grows slowly, why not go for something like the Kate look, which is longer in terms of both length and fringe. But be prepared to work with a curling iron or other tool (even if you have natural curls) to get that consistency of look.
Ideally you should be asking your hairdresser for a haircut which looks good and falls right right out of the gate - after it air dries, or has a quick blow with a hair dryer. Then again, I’m used to caucasian hair, so the rules might be different with Indian hair.
Believe me, I’m saying this in a totally friendly love-you-man type way buy were you marooned on an island after a ceded crash? Lol, yes kw is an actress. She’s had a few hits in the last decade, you know smalltime, like Titanic and such. Hendricks I can kind of understand since she’s a cable hit.
I have hair with a lot of wave in it. The Hendricks bob looks fine on her properly styled and accessorized. In the grocery store - I look like a cocker spaniel.
Thanks Khadaji, that’s really sweet of you to say. I just went through a year of he’ll and it’s just started to get better. I’ve been doing things like this to give myself stuff to look forward to since I’ve been going going going ever since I dumped my boyfriend and decided to back to school. I just want something a little different for my 30s.
If mistakes bother you, be sure not to read most my posts…
What did you go back to school for?
I was in my mid 20s when I went back to school for Computer Science. It was meant to hold me over - give me something to earn money at - while I found what I wanted to do with my life. Now, 20 years later I’m still doing it - and loving it.
To the OP, wow, you’re very good looking. I’d look for some other styles and leave yours the way it is. Neither of the two examples seem right for you.
I went back for my MBA. The break up was really painful and I threw myself into school in crazy way (I was always planning to go but the break up just accelerated everything).
It takes about a year to get in so I just started and am kind of just getting my life back, except for that whole starting over at 30 thing.
How do you feel about hair in your face? I can’t stand it, so while I think the Winslet 'do is pretty, and possibly better for your face shape, I wouldn’t be able to deal with it at all.
I’d go with Kate’s. Christina looks like she had a style at some point, but then maybe she took a nap. It looks pretty ratty to me, but could have been cute if she’d brushed it.
GilaB has a very important point too. If you have any acne or skin issues at all, it’s a terrible idea to have your hair touch your face. Plus the fact you may just hate actual hair in your face. All wise things to consider.
I haven’t had hair in my face since Crocodile Dundee first premiered…so honestly, I’m looking forward to bangs, it’s just a matter of figuring out how long to make them.
As far as my hair goes-I don’t mind it curly, I’m a little nervous about having it chemically straightened and I want to get a more interesting style than I have right now. Also my hair is more like white people hair than it is Indian hair. My mother’s side of the family probably has non-Indian blood, actually. No acne or skin issues.
I talked to my fashion obsessed sister, and she thinks I should get bangs but make them longer because the Christina Hendricks haircut looks slightly too young (in the sense that the bangs are almost kindergarten short) and might not be as easy to style when I’m by myself without any professional help. I do actually know how to get the tousled look, so that’s not a problem.
