Should I cut my hair?

I was watching America’s Next Top Model (-hangs head in shame-) and on the season finale one of the finalists had her hair cut very short in a pixie cut. I thought it looked lovely and was instantly tempted to try the same, but of course she’s a freakin’ model so it looks great on her. I’m not so sure about myself. I’ll definitely discuss this with my hair dresser but I was hoping Dopers could give me some impartial opinions.

So, here is me with straight hair about shoulder length.
And me with the shortest cut I’ve ever had (it was an accident).
Slightly longer hair with curls.
Even longer hair with curls.

Right now it’s sort of blah - blunt bangs and the ends are still curly from my last perm. I’ve been tying it up nowadays just to get it out of my face.

And here’s the haircut I’m contemplating. If you scroll down there’s a pic of Carey Mulligan with a slightly longish pixie cut - that’s what I was looking at.

I was also sort of thinking about a longish bob with curls.

So what say you Doper fashionistas? Should I take the plunge and shear it all off? Or just let it grow out?

I opened this thread completely thinking I’d want to say NO! to cutting your hair, but after seeing your pictures I think you’d look awesome with a short cut like that. I don’t like how she has hers combed so flat, but I think it would be rockin’ with some pomade to make it stick up a little. I’ll try to find a pic of what I’m thinking of…

How thick is your hair? It looks pretty thick, but it’s hard to tell from pictures.

I think nothing is quite so appealing as a pixie cut. You look smashing in all those pics though, so I think you’ll look great no matter what. I would go without curls or with minimal curls. If you don’t like it, well, hair grows. I vote yes.

I hope you can access these. They are on my friend’s Facebook page, and I’m not sure if she has it private or not. But if you can see them, that’s kind of what I think would be awesome on you. My friend does all sorts of crazy stuff with her hair, mohawks, completely shaved…she’s fearless when it comes to her hair.

I think you can carry a pixie well except not with severe bangs. I think whispy ones would be more flattering.

How about something like this? Longer on top and shorter on the periphery, but I think it would look really good with a rounder face. Plus you can put all kinds of funky colours in it.

I think you look good with it really long (well, shoulder length) and really short – the inbetweens don’t do as much for me.

Go for the super short – I think you’d look very sharp.

This should be a poll. I like #4 and #2 in that order

I’m not sure about going super short. In my opinion short hair on Asian women can make them look like a boy, but I’m white so maybe I just don’t see the visual cues others would.

Yeah, it’s on the thick side, and not naturally straight - it has a bit of a wave to it.

I like your friend’s pictures! I’m looking for something a little more tame for myself, I think.

I’m curvier than most Asian girls, so I don’t think a short haircut would necessarily make me look like a boy. I suppose it would depend on how I dressed.

Thanks for the opinions so far everyone.

I vote for long hair.

Of those choices, no. 4.

I love short hair on women, and I think you’d look great with a pixie cut.

And, hell, if it doesn’t work, hair grows back.

I looked at the pics and I like the last one best – #4. but you have the type of face that suits short or long hair. I think you would look very nice with a pixie. You have a sweet face. About a month ago I asked some friends on facebook for their opinion. I got an overwhelming “No! Don’t do it!” I have longish curly thick black hair. I usually blow dry the front into soft long curls that shape my face (there are a couple of pics of me on the pic thread) and I tie the rest in the back into a pony tail because it is just to thick. I regret asking people’s opinion on it. It influenced me to not do it, for now. I am tired of it though, and really in need of a change. Something completely different and low maintenance - like a pixie, or at least very short. One of these days I will just do it without saying anything to anyone. Hair grows if I end up not liking it, and mine grows fast.

You. Are. Adorable. That short hair pic is giving me a huge YES to the idea of you with a pixie cut. I think you would rock it out. You’ve got gorgeous bone structure.

Agreed on all counts. I love long hair on a woman, but you look great with short hair, as well. Go for it!

Well, I added on the mohawk pic because I was trying to give variety. But the other two aren’t much different than the one you posted. I think, with thick hair, a pixie cut would be awesome. My hair is super fine and very straight, so my forays into short hair haven’t always been successful, lol.

And I agree with whoever said they like it either really short, or long. The in-between length isn’t as flattering as the others. But you are as cute as a button, and I’m sure you could go bald and still look great.

Thanks for the compliments. I also think I prefer either short or long - in-between is kind of annoying to deal with (not short enough to be cool in the summer and not long enough to tie up).

I think I might take in some sample photos next week and see what my hair dresser says.

I agree with people who said you look best in picture #4. I would recommend not doing the first of the two hair styles you’re thinking about since I’ve yet to see any woman that looks good on (frankly, it reminds me too much of women in the early stages of growing their hair back out after getting through chemo). The other one would probably look awesome on you, though.

I also think long or short would suit you best – mid-length not so much. Also, that last pic you linked too (long with curls) is a really hard style to maintain on a daily basis. Whereas a pixie cut is the easiest style in the world as long as you get it cut very regularly. I had my hair cut short about 4 years ago and have not looked back. It was great throwing my hair straighteners in the bin and I never even have to use a hair brush. I just style it with product and my fingers and it looks great.

Do not. I repeat do not get a pixie cut. Very, very few people can pull it off. I like your hair in the 4th picture the best. Or go with the bob with curls.
