Should I quit my job?

I have worked at a company for 1 1/2 years doing tech support on a wireless PDA. I have been passed up for promotions time and time again. I have been promised and given promotions time and time again. I am severely underpaid for what I do. I have been here for way too long. I’m not in the “in” crowd. I don’t get invited and don’t go to the parties. I don’t drink or do drugs so I’m not cool enough. And that is where the promotions lie.

So I’ve established that I’m quiting my job. What I want to know is wether it would be wise to quit now before I have new job and take a vacation. I have a interview on January 19 with another company that I’ll probly get an offer from. If I put in my 2 weeks notice tommorrow My last day is on the 22nd. I could end up with 1-2 weeks of nothing.

Presently I have no real pressing financial woes. I am living at my parents house with my husband while we pay off our credit card debt. The only thing that could be effected is that I’m on a payment plan with my MasterCard to get the debt paid. I could get behind on that and it will bite my butt.

Would it be wise to take a “well deserved” vacation?

It seems to me that you’ve already answered your own question.

Would it be nice to take a vacation? Absolutely. Is it the smart thing to do when you have bills that need to be paid? No.

I would have to say don’t quit the old job until you get a new one. Its always easier to look for a new job when you have a job.

But if I get a job, in my field the likelyhood of it starting before two weeks notice is up is high. I could have to either not give my present job proper notice AND not get a day off. If i give it this week I am giving myself enough leeway to give this job notice since I do want good refrences here.

I wouldn’t quit the job until you have a new one in hand. If I had a nickel for every time one of my friends said “I’ll probably get an offer” and then quit their job I would have about $0.35. If I got another nickel for every time they actually ended up with the new job I would still have $0.35.

Time off to do nothing is nice, but you are on a payment plan with your credit cards and two weeks free time (when your husband won’t have free time with you) probably isn’t worth the risk of falling behind on that.

Are you required to give two weeks notice? If not, don’t feel bad about not giving sufficient notice, they also had the ride to fire you on 5 seconds notice.

But if you get the new job give the notice that you can, and you may get lucky and they’ll tell you to just stay home for the interim.

If you get offered the job at the other place, you tell them that you need to give your present employer two weeks notice. If they absolutely won’t give you time to give the notice, do you really want to work for a company who isn’t understanding about professionalism?

If it were me, I’d continue working until I found another job. Then I’d give two-week notice. If you’re on a payment plan to pay off your Mastercard, I imagine you’ve had some credit problems in the past. An extra week’s pay is a heckuva lot better than no pay. Every extra little bit counts when you have bills to pay.

But, if all you’re really wanting is for us to tell you to give your notice, then give your notice. Take some time off.
