Should I resurrect Battlefield 2 or move on to something else?

I loved the shit out of BF2. I could play Karkand, Sharqi or Jalalabad all damn day long.

So I neglected it when my gaming rig died in 2014 or so. Apparently Steam ditched a lot of accounts, I ditched my CD media, I decided that with 4-year-old twins I’d never have time for it anyway. But I’ve reconsidered now. I found my old battle tag exists on bf2hub.com, and it would probably work if I had my old CD key and credentials (which I don’t have).

I can probably finagle a CD key and credentials. But is there a game equally good/superior to BF2 that I should just commit to buying the software and equipment for it?

What I liked about BF2 was the realistic desert combat, the game engine, the vehicle motion, the awesome maps, the artillery and UAV and radar usage. I was also a big fan of the Lost Village mod of Modern Combat for BF 1942.

Basically, I got money to spend and I want to get the stuff I used to have, or something as good/better.

I assume you meant this to be in the Game Room? Moving.

Yes, thank you.

I can’t imagine that you’d be able to find anyone else playing BF2 in 2020. If you liked things about BF2 then at the very least check out BF5 which will have built on previous versions.

I’m playing CoD MW at the moment. While it isn’t realistic it is fun. Ground War is a mode that is similar to what BF did - a large map with several control points to fight over.

Have you actually played Battlefield 1? It’s the best one for me!

COD:MW (2019) is about as realistic as BF2. That’s what I’d suggest, but it’s lacking the combined arms gameplay. It’s probably the best execution of the ground pounder experience of BF2. The downside is that it’s COD so you need to deal with the annual refresh cycle.

That game is really fun.

I’m not sure if scifi is your jam, but Planetside 2 broadly hits the same notes as the Battlefield series. It’s also had a recent update releasing outfit-level air carriers. Though to be fair, I haven’t played a Battlefield since BF 2142, and haven’t touched Planetside 2 in some years. Your mileage may vary. (I’ve been following it because I will likely jump on the inevitable Planetside 3.)

If playing with several hundred people at a time isn’t your jam, there is also Angels Fall First, which is also scifi, but it’s more on the Battlefield scale of things (64 or fewer player cap in a match). You can also just play it solo against bots which can be fairly credible opponents at times. It doesn’t have anywhere near the same level of community as the Battlefields, though.
