I swear I remember my mother always Scotchgarding our suede boots and sneakers, but the can I recently bought says not to use it on leather. It only lists canvas shoes. So, I looked up Scotchgard online and even the “leather protector” version says not to use it on suede.
I know I should probably listen, but I really think my mother did this all the time without bad results.
Would you Scotchgard your suede?
They actually have spray-on protectors specifically designed for use on suede. Some suede protectors will also work on leather, and maybe your mother was using one of those, but the reverse isn’t true: There are definitely leather protectors that will not work on suede.
I think the problem is that certain leather protectors will turn suede all stiff and crunchy, and you definitely don’t want that.
You can Google “suede protector,” or else you should be able to find a version at any shoe store.
