We are having a teeny-tiny wedding ceremony in a few weeks, which will be conducted by a Marriage Commissioner (I guess similar to a Justice of the Peace in the U.S.).
He charges a flat rate, plus mileage since we are having the ceremony about an hour outside of town. Part of his flat rate goes to the government, and he keeps the rest, plus the mileage charges.
It’ll come to about $175-$180 total. Should we just give him an envelope with $200? Or is tipping necessary?
He is sort of a friend of my stepfamily - he’s a very nice man but I don’t know him well at all. I don’t want to insult him, or put him in an awkward situation (“Uh, Stainz, you gave me too much money”). OR, is a tip expected, and if so, should we be giving him more? It’s not that we’re cheap, we’re just not sure of the etiquette.
Ideas?
