Sure, but just like with slave reparations, sometimes the people who did the harm aren’t around any more to recompense anyone, and asking uninvolved third parties to do so only compounds a large injustice with a minor one.
But that’s nonsense. This particular situation exists because there are particular laws relating to guns, just as there are particular laws relating to other sorts of property that might create similar situations. The laws might well be bad ones: but that doesn’t change the essential fact that you can’t generalize about property rights when there are specific facts involved that aren’t necessarily involved in all property rights principles.
There is nothing in the article that says the guns were legally owned by the robbery victims when they were stolen. So a background check seems like a safe thing to do. I don’t think the victims should pay for it. Returning a sawed off shotgun would be insane. I agree with the suggestion of returning the shotgun without the sawed off barrel.

I’ll have you know that I have a federal toaster license and currently own two sawed off toasters. One in the kitchen and the other, well lets just say I can get to it when I need it and leave it at that.
If one could have an illegally altered firearm returned by the police as-is on the grounds that it had been altered by someone who had stolen it, this would allow persons to gain legal posession of illegal weapons through a pretty simple ruse, don’t you think?

I have been shooting shotguns for 33 years or so. All of them have been either pump or automatics.
In my experience, it takes perhaps 15 seconds to remove the barrel. It’s built that way so it is easy to clean. These are all single barrel shotguns.
So… IF it’s not a double barrel the police could confiscate the barrel, give the rest of the gun back to these folks and let it ride.

Yes, I meant thte shotgun should be given back to the couple. The barrel should be removed but returned with the gun. The couple should have as long as they want/need to fix the gun.
I’m not sure why this is a “real issue” (apart from you being prosecuted if you happen to have more than one counterfeited bill on you, and even then, I assume it would be applied with discretion). Why would you expect a compensation for having been victimized (by passing a counterfeited bill to you)? It’s not different from any other crime. As a victim, you only can receive compensation from the person who wronged you or from your insurance.
If you had bought a property title for the Eiffel tower, would you expect anybody (apart from the scammer) to hand you the tower or compensate your monetary loss? Nobody apart from the crook who sold the tower/ passed to you a counterfeited bill is responsible for your loss. Asking for a compensation for counterfeited money is akin to having your car stolen and expecting the car manufacturer to give you a new one for free.

I went to the FBI and they said this is clearly a kidnapping but unless they go out of state with my SON the local police have to handle it. The local police are NOT going to return my SON they said. Once again this is Criminal Justice and not Justice for Victims.
