Should Pete Rose be put in the MLB Hall of Fame?

If they could prove that he ever tried to fix a game than that would be different. There is no proof that he ever did. He is just addicted to gambling.

So, in your opinion, what does baseball need to do to prevent this from happening again? What does baseball need to do to prevent even the appearance that this might happen again?

He bet on his own team. The team he was the manager of. That team.

He bet that his team would win. Big difference. Yes he is a degenerate gambler no doubt. He is not some evil person that deserves to be shit on for the rest of his life. I don’t have any answers. I apologize if I offended you. Pete rose is a hall of fame baseball player.

Yes, he is. You can read this entire thread, and I think you might find one poster who disagrees with that statement.

In the process of reading this entire thread, you will also find the gambling issue discussed in great detail, including the Black Sox scandal. I ask you again, “So, in your opinion, what does baseball need to do to prevent this from happening again? What does baseball need to do to prevent even the appearance that this might happen again?”

Betting on your own team to win, while not as bad as betting on your team to lose, is still terrible. You could jeopardize your team’s long term well-being to try and win today, just because you’re afraid of running afoul of the bookies.

It is perhaps worth noting that Rose is not “shit on” by MLB. In certain contexts, he has been welcomed and even honored. He was invited to Fenway Park and Turner Field in 1999 to be acclaimed as a member of the “All-Century Team,” for example.

He just can’t get a plaque with his name, in that room in Cooperstown.

Please read the entire thread before commenting. It’s clear you’ve just skipped to the end. We don’t need to rehash that same garbage argument again until we get you up to speed with the rest of the class.

Ok. Calm down. My point is very clear.

And please don’t act like you know anything about baseball. It’s annoying listening to morons like you.

And has been refuted several times in this thread, well before you even arrived. One of two things is clear - either you haven’t read the thread, or you’re unable to respond to even the most basic flaws in your argument.

Personal attacks and insults are not permitted in this forum. You may take this as a formal warning. Do not do it again.

Revived this zombie after seeing this article, “Fox Sports reportedly has fired Pete Rose over underage-sex allegations”.

These reports are about Rose when he was in his 30s, not recent.
According to the story, Rose admitted to the affair but claims it was OK because she was 16 years old at the time. The age of consent in Ohio was (is?) 16. The victim, or I guess Rose would claim, consenting adult, has filed a sworn statement that claims the relationship started before she turned 16.

How about now, does Rose belong in the HOF?

Yes. Is every athlete who was accused of wrongdoing without evidence was eliminated from a HoF; who would be left? We don’t and can’t know the truth of these allegations and that have no bearing on his baseball career.

Once his lifetime ban is served and he’s dead, sure, let him in the Hall.

I agree and while we’re at it, lets put Shoeless Joe in already.

Anyone have an unblocked link for the article from post #193?

Try this

Dead plus 50 years and I’m cool with him going in. Until then, to hell with him.

I used to think that, too, but have since changed my view. Betting on the game is a permanent ban. This isn’t about punishing Pete Rose by never letting him see his name in Cooperstown or about moral failings or how ugly he is, this is about the integrity of the game. The only way to preserve that is a permanent ban. If people think their kids or grandkids will get to see their name in the Hall, that just might be all they need to take a chance. Pete Rose took a chance and figured his star power would let him get away with it. I say there is no way that should ever be allowed. Ever.
