Should the internet shut down at 12 and star back up at 7 ?

mrqwertyasd, I’m sure there’s some sort of Parental Control program you can get and install so your wife and/or kids can’t access the internet between 2400 and 0700 your time.

Are you asking if your personal internet connection should do this or if everyone’s internet connection should do this…or, if the entire internet itself should do this? If you are talking about the first one, well, that’s personal…I schedule my kids network (both wireless and wired) to shut down at 9pm and come back up at 8am, but that’s just me. If you mean everyone’s internet connection should be, well…no. Why would that be desirable? If you mean the last one, well…that’s insane.

I’m hoping you meant the first one.

Would someone be so kind as to tell me how to do this? Even better, if I can block some devices after X:00 but not others?

An interesting question, and not completely out to lunch.

A friend of mine is a paramedic and one quiet night they were dispatched on a call to check on an elderly couple.

When the paramedics arrived at the home sometime after 1100 pm, and asked about the health issue, the couple said they usually checked it out on the internet first before calling an ambulance, but since it was so late, they had assumed the internet was closed.

So, not such a dumb question afterall.

High powered tube transmitters don’t like being switched off and on. And it takes a while for a cold one to warm up. It’s easier to just leave them on all the time. And “dead air” is a bad thing, so they’d put a white balance/registration card up on an easel, aim and focus a camera on it, and leave for the night.

Electricity wasn’t free in the 50s, 60s, and 70s. The cost of repairing the tube transmitter if it failed must have been more than the electricity cost of leaving it running like that. I thought those high power transmitters ate hundreds of kilowatts.

I’m guessing the OP’s point is to enforce bedtime and keep people from late night surfing. But one time zone’s night is another time zone’s day.

And some of us sleep and work weird hours within our time zones.

I go to work at 4 am twice a week. I like to check in on the world-- especially the weather report-- before I go to work. (and browse a few websites, sometimes).

I’ve got co-workers who work from 9 pm to 5:30 am or so. Their sleeping time is definitely other co-workers’ day (many of my co-workers work 6-2 or 7-3 or 8-4. And yes, there are people working 2 pm -10 or so. The building is never empty except on Thanksgiving and Christmas).

So if you shut off the internet after 11pm, that’ll take out all the cellphones too, because they use Internet Protocol. Also many ATMs.
