Should we follow the lead of snopes

and establish a dedicated forum for discussion of the “Attack on America” and the “War on Terrorism”?

I wasn’t overly thrilled by the establishment of Cafe Society as I felt many of the topics fell within the province of IMHO and MPSIMS anyway, but it’s certainly kept a lot of trivia-type threads out of GQ (or at least those started by posters who’ve been around for a while).

Given how many GQ and GD threads are being started daily which relate directly or indirectly to September 11 and it’s aftermath, I wonder whether we should consider giving this topic (which sure isn’t going to go away in the near future) it’s own space.

Thoughts?

BTW, kudos to the mods/admins for the way they’ve managed to strike a balance in dealing with posts relating to the events of September 11.

If it were my decision, I’d say no. Creating a new forum for a specific current event isn’t a good idea, because long after the event is no longer being discussed, the forum is still around, and it’s tough as hell to get rid of. I believe that having a current events forum has been discussed before, and seeing as there isn’t one, I’m thinking it’s not widely supported.

I think this point has been made before, but not all threads about “the September 11 attacks” or “the War on Terrorism” belong in the same place:

“Is it true that Osama bin Laden owns Procter & Gamble?”* belongs in GQ.

“Is our cause still just even though innocent civilians have died?” belongs in GD.

“May wolverines devour Osama bin Laden’s bowels!” belongs in the Pit.

“Would Osama be a good name for my pet tarantula?” belongs in IMHO.

“I had this weird dream about Osama bin Laden last night” belongs in MPSIMS.

“Should they re-re-make King Kong with him back on the Empire State Building now?” belongs in Cafe Society.

As far as I know neither Cecil nor the Staff have answered any quesions about Osama bin Laden, the “War on Terrorism”, etc., but if they do, comments about those columns would go in the appropriate “Comments on…” forum.

I guess I can’t really think of any reason (except for inquiries about the desirability of an All Osama Forum) why any of this would crop up in ATMB. (“Hi, I’m a new user, posting from a cave in, um, Central Asia, and I’m wondering, you guys can’t trace my physical location, right?”)
