Should we sell our second car?

My husband and I have two cars. We live in Portland, Oregon, land of public transportation. We work together 5 days a week. We grocery shop together and have a store within walking distance. We rarely both need to go two places at the same time, so one car sits for weeks at a time while we use the other for commuting, then we switch.

Should we sell his car (mine is new, his is a 1999. Mine takes regular unleaded, his takes premium)? What pitfalls are we in for? We’ve never had just one car, so we’re making a list of the pros and cons.

We don’t have (and won’t have) children, just pets. We will be working at the same place for the next few years at least.

The money we get for the car would pay down credit cards so we can save for a house.

This seems like a good idea, but we need to know what issues we haven’t thought of yet.

If you can get a good price and really could use the extra money, then it seems like a no-brainer – sell one of the cars! (Bicycles are underrated, unless you get hit by a car.)

Just based on what you said in your post - heck yeah! ESPECIALLY with all of the public transportation, and Portland being so very “bike friendly.” If something happened to one of your cars you can easily get a rental (which might be part of your insurance plan, or if you have AA might be cheap).

My buddy and his wife have just one car for the two of them. Granted, she doesn’t work and he works at home but still it works out for them. And I don’t think they live in an area with too much public transport.

The idea of paying down credit cards makes me giddy. Do it!

You will also save on insurance and licensing. The second car is costing you a lot just to sit there in case you need it. Sure, you will probably run into a situation where you’re inconvenienced, but when that happens just remember how much your saving.

You are in one of the clearest situations I’ve ever seen on the boards where it would be a good idea to sell. Public transport available, stores within walking distance… I feared that you would be like my friends who are living in the exurbs and could really use two cars and are getting by with one until they have more money (or at least less debt).

Sell the more expensive one to run (insurance and operating costs), unless you need some of its specific capabilites or qualities. (It’s the only one that can haul all you camping stuff/it’s a valuable heirloom that belonged to your deceased father/it’s the only one that can fit all your nieces and nephews/etc.) That seven thousand dollars a year or so that you’ll save can pay for a lot of cab rides and rentals for occaisional needs like when you need to haul something home from Ikea.
