Should Weird Earl's Be Restored?

I almost never go to the front page, so no opinion on the Weird Earls.

Regarding Twitter:

How can you argue with that

In a way reading WE was my introduction to the board. It got me reading threads long before I posted anything or joined. And its one of the main reasons I still check the “home page” every week or so. So my vote is yes.

Ditto.

But on that note, why can’t the powers that be tweet out funny links so that the Twitter feed has both SD-related stuff and Weird Earl’s type links? Best of both worlds.

Also, someone needs to teach Ed how to use Twitter. Descriptive titles aren’t just a good idea on the SDMB. They’re also helpful when you post links to Twitter.

I somehow managed to read the thread title as “Should Weird Al’s Ears Be Restored?”.

Why can’t there be both? And why wasn’t there an option for that? I’m guessing that means coding would be involved.

I never clicked the Weird Earls and I’m not going to use the twitter feed, but combining both things and tweeting the links makes the most sense to me.

No Opinion for me. I type an “S” in the address bar and the first two things that pop up are links to Straight Dope User CP and Straight Dope New Posts. I pick the one I want and I rarely ever see the front page.

As far as I know, it’s not an either/or. Restoring Weird Earl’s doesn’t mean that Twitter would be eliminated.

A resounding “yes” for restoring it. Some folks here will be using the Twitter feed, no doubt, and from what Colibri has just said, having both will work.

I’ll certainly make as many candidate entries as sufficiently “weird” sites as I come across.

I just don’t think Internet weirdos need or deserve any more attention.

There should be a weird Earls Forum on the SDMB.

But not on the front page.

Oh, wait, that’s not a link to a weird SDMB thread? Never mind my vote, then.

…OK, actually, I just care less. From “Yes, keep,” to, “Sure, whatever.”

With so many sites out there basically devoted to weird or interesting page spotting, don’t think it’s worth the trouble myself.

What CarnalK said. The competition to WE is Fark and Reddit. It doesn’t stand a chance.

Weird Earl’s feels like an homey leftover from the time of angelfire websites and embedded midi files. I don’t think it really fits anymore.

Just curious but did the name come from something specific? Or is “Earl” just a name you’d expect a weird person to have?

Say it out loud.

URL.

Although I did in fact know an Earl once who was rather eccentric. That’s probably just a coincidence, though.

Edit: Also, ninja’ed.

Oh. Most people probably say You Are El, not Earl, thus killing the pun. I know I didn’t get it until reading this.

This is another JIFF vs GIF situation. Old out of touch people say “Earl.” Everyone under 40 says U-R-L.

Which makes it the perfect pun for the SD homepage actually. :stuck_out_tongue:
