Should You Thank People For Their Twitter Following?

I have only been on twitter for a short while now. But I am still delighted when I see new people following me. As you know, I am a very opinionated person. And I enjoy the idea more people will be able to share in my thoughts and ideas.

Anyways, should I thank people, when the decide to follow me? What is the (unofficial) “netiquette” rule regarding this?

Because it is rather a bother. I do still have one of those slow home computers. And I usually just read the notification, and move on.

I’m thinking more IMHO. I’ll move it over there for you.

No.

It’s not required. However I’ve had a few people “introduce” themselves to me on twitter after following me and in that case it’s polite to send a reply back. Unless you’re very popular and don’t have enough time, I think the best course is to take a look through their recent posts to see if you have things in common. If you think they’re cool, maybe comment or like one of their recent posts. Or even follow them if they seem extra cool - mutual follows opens up some new paths for friendships if you want to foster some.

I heard something recently (I’m only paraphrasing the idea), and it’s that if you’re not feeling supported enough, then you’re not doing enough supporting yourself. People like reciprocation, and someone who only takes won’t be as well-liked as someone who also gives.

No. Simply no.
