About 8 years ago I rebuilt the picket fence around the back yard. We have a tree that leans into the neighbor’s yard, so we notched it to let the tree pass through the plane of the fence.
The off cut was a perfect rendition of a Pac Man ghost. So me and my nieces painted it red and put eyes on it. And that led to us taking a leftover piece of fence panel and making the rest of the ghosts, which I then hung on a tree in the yard.
This is the result, which has delighted guests for years:
That is just delightful and I will be surprised if any post tops that one! Thank you for sharing.
So here’s something from our house that visitors usually like. I’ve been playing Javanese gamelan for years and have a full set of instruments which are housed at the local cultural center. Due to various moves and circumstances, we ended up with an extra gong stand and large gong, which lives on our front lanai.
This is my den. The picture over the mantle is a velvet painting my sister won at a carnival when we were kids; after she died unexpectedly, I found it while cleaning out her house and framed it. It’s a Molly Hatchet album cover.
My best friend is a gourd artist, she sends me something every year for my birthday and Christmas. Here are several pieces I have on display in my living room:
I was at a (long gone) restaurant, and I saw this sculpture. I went over to it, and it was for sale. I ended up making a deal with the owner to get a better price, and it’s been a feature in our living room ever since. This isn’t a great photo, since it has a hidden backlight that comes on at night. I’m away for a the summer, so I can’t take a better photo:
My apartment is filled with cool stuff. I finally started decluttering and now some of that stuff is properly on display. At the annual Eastern Penitentiary flea market, I bought a nice display case to mount on the wall and display even more cool stuff.
Unfortunately, I had to make an emergency flight to Florida. The only photographs I have relating to my new apartment were taken accidentally while seeing if my ride had arrived, or answering a call while holding groceries and trying to open the building’s front door.
I have found my Playmates Enterpise D with lights and sounds. I found my Recognizer from Tron 2. I don’t remember finding Rodan. I think my fishing line was lost in the move. Also, the ceilings in my new apartment are too high to reach without a good step ladder. As a result, none of those items is hanging from my ceiling.
My father in law, after retiring has spent much of the past few years doing blacksmithing for fun (not for profit, though he’s sold some of it). Here’s a small piece he did for a spice rack shelf at our home.
We just finished a re-landscaping of our (tiny) back yard. We (SWMBO and I) replaced our dying grass with hardscaping and succulents. I guess we’ll be staying here for awhile longer. It got done just last week, literally.
Sorry for all the pictures but we’re really happy with how it turned out.

In a couple of weeks or so I can show you our climbing roses blooming for the fourth time this year, climbing over an arbor. First three bloomings were in March. If I took a photo now, it would just be buds that you wouldn’t be able to see.
Envious! What color? Don’t forget to cone back when in bloom!
I had a gorgeous red (slightly dark pinkish-red) climber which bloomed once a year in May/June, but it’s given up the ghost, and anyway, I’m no longer willing to deal with the massive thorns anymore. But they sure are gorgeous!
Half of Europe’s population lives in apartment buildings, and I am among them. I’ve always been a city dweller at heart. My apartment building stands in the distance, although it is barely visible in this picture.
The collapse of Communism led to numerous legal disputes over property ownership—some so prolonged that nature reclaimed the land. The area in this picture has transformed into an urban delta, and the city council has designated it as a protected space.
