I bumped this because I just saw the movie, enjoyed it, and I wondered if anyone else saw something I think I saw.
Remember Fiona as Ogre? Get that image into your mind…
Green Oprah Winfrey?
This by the way is NOT meant to cast aspersions on ANYONE, I have never watched Oprah’s show and have no idea what it’s about, but the physical similarity, to me, was unmistakeable.
Well I’m gonna chime in here and say that we (husband, 6 year old son, and I) saw Shrek 3 times in the theaters, bought the DVD, and also went to see it at his school’s Movie Night last friday. I thought it was funny, cute, silly… whatever. It was fun. I didn’t try to read any deep meaning into it.
It wasn’t the greatest movie ever. It wasn’t even the greatest children’s movie ever. I thought it was okay, but I had to reach that conclusion after the 4th time I tried to watch it; the first three times I fell asleep in the middle of it. My 4 year old daughter loves it though. She wants to be Princess Fiona so Shrek can come and save her and she can marry him. (She’s been planning her wedding for about 6 months now, I guess she finally found someone to fill the part of the groom when she saw Shrek.)
I thought The Emperor’s New Groove was the best animated movie in a long time. I loved that movie and I’ve seen it probably a dozen times. Two nights ago I took my kids to see Monsters, Inc and I thought that was great, too. My daughter cried at the end, and I think that’s the first time she’s ever cried because of an emotional scene in a movie. (Wait…Emperor’s New Groove / Monsters, Inc…Maybe it’s a John Goodman thing?) At any rate, Shrek wasn’t nearly as good as either of those 2 movies, but it’s passable. I agree that it was overly hyped though.
I loved it. I thought the jokes were very funny, the subtle Ogre behavior very bizzare and enjoyable (squeezing a bug onto a toothbrush for toothpaste, etc) and frankly, when they did the Dating Game princess descriptions followed by The Pina Colada song, I nearly wet my pants laughing. I enjoyed the movie a lot, and have seen it a few times. I loved the music- the soundtrack is fantastic.
The ONLY part I had a problem with (and call me too PC if you want) is that the princess in her “ugly” form was fat. I realize that Ogre’s are fat, so it fits, but I had a problem with her looking at her reflection in her now fat (in addition to being green and Ogre like) self and being disgusted.
I think they could have made the same point about her turning into an ogre without changing her weight signifigantly to reflect a now “ugly” self.
Anyhoo, all in all a very enjoyable movie in my book.
