Shrink (2009)

Has anyone else seen this movie? When I was home for Christmas, my mom and I checked through the On Demand movies, and the trailer for this seemed interesting. Kevin Spacey stars as a psychiatrist to the stars. It’s another film about LA/Hollywood, complete with a handful of seemingly-unrelated storylines involving people tangentially related across the socioeconomic spectrum that converge at the end.

Not terrible - but not good. One thing that bugged me was how it seemed every character was some caricature of a real-life person. Kevin Spacey’s shrink-to-the-stars was…Dr. Drew? Jack Huston’s Irish blockbuster actor with a huge schlong was…Colin Farrell. Saffron Burrows’ aging beautiful actress married to a country music star was…Nicole Kidman. An uncredited Robin Williams’ overrated and philandering director was…?

Re-animating zombie thread to say I saw this tonight on Netflix and thought it was very good. Yes, the characters as written seem like stand-ins for real Hollywood people, but the actors did such a fine job it really didn’t matter. The only jarring point of the whole movie to me was there seemed to be no reason for Kevin Spacey to show up at the meeting at the end. A bit slow paced, which IMO a character study should be. I give it 4 out of five stars for of movie of this genre.
