Shrug THIS

I’ve seen plenty of rants about the overuse of smileys, but I don’t recall a rant about a more obnoxious problem: the use of the shrug or  over…and over…and over.

I was reminded of this feeling when I cruised through this thread…which by my quick count already had six instances of the damn thing.

It’s not like the cute little shrug really adds that much meaning to a point…and once you’ve passed the critical mass of shrug, it really just seems like an even more pointless gesture.

<standard aside to the first moron to post a shrug in response>

Yeah, that was bothering me as well.

Yeah, I guess you’re right.

Meh.

I shrug all the time, I never even realized it could be an annoying thing. I think it shows the “eh, I don’t really care” attitude better than most word things you could say.

I find it very annoying too, but it labels a poster as an idiot, in my opinion, which can be a useful thing.

If you really shrug all the time (which was the point of the OP), then yeah…it’s annoying as hell. Do you really need to go out of your way THAT much to say “I don’t care”?

I wonder how the gesture came to be.

Who shrug cares?

:stuck_out_tongue:

Is it any worse than concluding your thoughts with YMMV or IMO or FWIW?

Or when someone is only teasing the poster they conclude their comments with  ?

I managed to decypher IMO, would some kind soul aid me with YMMV and FWIW?

Your Mileage May Vary and For What It’s Worth.

When my response to something I’m reading is , I hit “back” and open another thread that I might actually be interested in. Sort of like in real life (that’s IRL for most posters, Ale) - I don’t talk a lot when I have nothing to say.

Thank you, JayJay

shrug I dunno what all the fuss is. I just shrug it off and go on with life. Some people just don’t know any other way of expressing their moods I guess.

(I have to admit tho… I WAS a little irritated writing that just now. Go figure)

I may have used it once or twice. As long as it isn’t excessive, i.e. to break up the monotony of YMMV, IMHO, etc., I don’t see a problem, really.

Then again, I havent seen these posters who  excessively.

Maybe those of us who shrug, should do something different. I dunno…

maybe a facial tick… tick

but then you look like a bomb or something…

hmmmm

maybe we could say convulse

Well, you know, there’s shrugging:

“The guy at the 7-11 shortchanged me a buck, but I didn’t bother to go back. shrug Life’s to short.”

. . . and then there’s shrugging at someone:

“You say that what I posted was very offensive to you. shrug So what?”

The former doesn’t bother me. The latter is grating.

Um, if you spelt it correctly; tic; then you would, alas, not look like a bomb

Problem solved! :stuck_out_tongue:
