Not smiling is not being a “rude, prickly bitch” or “boorish and hostile”. The decent guys I know get that. If he takes it as such and gives it back “with interest”, he’s part of the problem.

FWIW, as a participant in that thread, I was not offended by octopus’ joke, and I’m not just saying that because he’s an octopus. I think it’s fair to say he views child molestation as a more egregious crime than sexual assault of adult women, which is debatable, but nothing he said in that thread suggested he didn’t have empathy for the victims.
I was more offended by Leaffan’s attempt to downplay the pervasive problem of violence against women. I think I expressed my issue with that effectively within the thread itself.
Yes, this board is terribly misogynistic. I actually have regular arguments with my husband about how it’s not as misogynistic as he thinks it is. It’s a small minority of posters making the comments, but they are given the illusion of complicity with the silence of others. His argument is that it is the silence which creates the culture.
I agree it would be ideal if we could just become completely emotionally removed from the misogyny and have academic conversations rather than becoming upset, but some of us have PTSD and there are times we just need to step back for the sake of our own mental health. I only post here when I am 100% sure I can psychologically handle it, and it was years of struggling to be ‘‘open minded’’ at the expense of emotional exhaustion that got me to that principle.
