Shut up USA

What I find endlessly amusing is the notion that any country on the Planet Earth does what the USA has done so far in the Cup and their fans act any differently.

“We’re going to win!” My, what an insult.

You Americans are all just so, so … happy … and, and … excited … and … proud … and … confident!

It’s just not fair!! No other country’s soccer fans would ever think of acting so boorishly!

Yeesh, switch to decaf, TwistofFate. I had read the CNN thing, too, and I don’t think that they’re often wrong. Besides, if that’s what the guys who shot him shouted, I would think that the motive would be pretty clear.

And I’ve seen politicians brawl in bars . . .

lobley as everyone else has stated- you are a moron. Not too surprising you have slunk off to troll-ville after your bitter little anti-american venom launch. What is the matter? Not finding much traction for your twisted worldview here? Sorry chump.

There is a word for people like you, people who dislike others based on their nationality. :wally
Now, on a brighter note this World Cup has been fun to watch- but does their seem to be a bit of an extra “home field advantage” when Korea plays? If so, is that well understood by the more knowledgable football fans (much like the LA Laker effect in USA Pro Basketball)?

Well, bully for us. Not only are our women better soccer players, they get more respect from back home than anyone else does, too. Better at soccer, better at gender equality. Go USA!

The USA women footballers are at least ten times better than the England women’s football team. The state of women’s football in England is atrocious. Precious little skill, fuck-all tactical awareness, and practically no will whatsoever to keep possession and make good play. Yipe, I make better passes and run at a defence better than these ladies.

In the Olden Days (the 30s, IIRC), we had some super women’s teams. It’s all gone to shit.

Better at … [coughcoughcoughcoughcough]!!!
Man, I’m goin’ to Hell.

Better at women’s football is not the same as better at soccer.

Better at women’s football is not the same as better at soccer.

lobley, must you always do this? You sound like a bitter old man nursing his half down the pub.

USA and Korea thoroughly deserve their quarter-final places. South Korea especially have worked their bollocks off.

Who knows, maybe you are ambushed by “Yanks” while you’re innocently walking down the road; who’s to say they weren’t football fans anyway? Let them enjoy it! I for one shouted myself hoarse on Saturday…and if we won? Fuck me, I daren’t even think about it, but I can see myself “never shutting up about it”.

Well said Red Devil.

Thank you Crusoe.

Roll on Friday!

In the unlikely event of an England win on Friday (hey, I’m not getting my hopes up) then I will shout loudly enough that I’ll be happy to be told, “Shut up, England!”.

Oh. sort of like US Women’s Basketball, huh?

(what?)

I’d say that when a UK football fan with the handle “Red Devil” says something, all others should bow before him and acknowledge his correctness.

I’ll just kindly refer you to my posts following that one. They will go on to state that I (unbenknownst to dopers, which is my fault) commonly use exageration as a tool. I sometimes forget that you can’t read my tone of voice.

All I was trying to say is that America may be (understandably) bitter if they lost in basketball to Croatia (or anyone else for that matter) because they are so used to domination. Granted I used some unwarrented colorful language but that is easily explainable as well. I lost a lot of money because USA took out Portugal.

I think the general mentality of the fan of a powerhouse in any sport is that they are happy to cheer for underdogs - as long as they don’t beat my team.

Hmm. Whatever became of lobley, anyway? The OP, and then… not much.

  1. Please don’t think lobley represents Britain. (Personally I think he may be rather young…)

  2. I think it’s a shame that the American media tend to show sports that can be packaged for TV, and are usually only for US franchises.

  3. I’m pleased that the US women’s soccer team did so well (and that Brandi took her shirt off  )

I’ll tell ya this glee, Americans would absolutely LOVE 45 minutes without a commercial break if they realized that’s what soccer coverage entailed. I understand that in Europe, TV shows are run straight through for the 22 minutes or so, then commercials are run continuously. Here in the States, we put up with 5 minute long commercial breaks between acts on all our favorite shows.

Sports coverage is just more of the same. If people started watching soccer, they’d adore the 45 commercial free minutes. That has been the major obstacle to soccer developing as a sport in the States, because TV leads the way. Now that a feasible way has been found to present soccer and still get ad revenue (they’ve been working on that nonstop since WC 94), it’s poised to take off like a rocket.

The problem the US will always face in developing a love for football was exemplified in the women’s championship. The game was nil-nil through regulation. Some people (including President Clinton) called it the greatest game of football they’d ever witnessed. Others called it a scoreless borefest.

Personally, I think we’re on the verge of a soccer awakening in the USA. Within a few years, soccer is poised to be firmly entrenched as the 5th sport behind the NFL, MLB, NBA, and NHL in that order. It could easily rival the NHL within a decade, as hockey fans are among the most easily converted to soccer enthusiasts (since we sit through exciting 0-0 draws throughout the season.)

I certainly hope lobley doesn’t represent the whole of the UK. We need support from our greatest friends on the international scene to develop the sport here in the States.
