One thing that has struck me about all this is the lack of sick jokes circulating. They tend to crop up at any disaster, but no one is insensitive enough to circulate them. I think that’s a strong measure of our sense of shock and outrage.
Be patient.
There are enough depraved people out there to think of them.
And besides, humor has often been a way for some people to cope with stress and pain.
Thank god that’s what this thread is about. I opened this thread thinking “This is going to be the quickest locked/deleted thread in the history of the boards.”
I hope no one actually has the brass ones to post any jokes. And if they do, I hope no Mod holds back in banning them.
I am not looking forward to The Onion next Tuesday.
Actually, I heard one today but I will not repeat it here because it appalled me that people could joke about such a thing.
I’ve heard one or two myself. They didn’t help me feel any better.
As we were leaving a Spanish class the other day in which we had discussed the tragedy and been freaked out by a lot of firetrucks going past, a girl looked out the window and yelled “OH MY GOD!!”
“What? What? What? What?”
“Psych.”
I was NOT amused.
I’ve used some medium funny humor on the SDMB just to try and help me get through this thing, but yeah, I wouldn’t be looking forward to that email with the “WTC Joke of the Day” in it anytime soon.
This one hit waaaay too close to home, folks.
Not so tasteless, but relatively funny for any Unix dorx out there. From http://www.rotten.com :

My friend and I were just debating about next week’s Onion. In the past they’ve been willing to go after anything, and quite brilliantly I may add. Some of my favorites: “Columbine School Safe For Bullying Again” and “McVeigh’s Executions Brings Victims Back to Life.” But even these headlines were put well after the tragedies that occasioned them. I wonder where they’ll draw the line this time…
So my friend and I had a little contest to see who could think up proposed Onion headlines for next week. The rule was it had to be about the tragedy, but only funny in a roundabout way, much as the Onion often does. We came up with some, but I guess they should only be posted in a separate thread–I wouldn’t want to hijak this one.
But as Atreyu said, truly tasteless jokes are sure to come soon…
I’ve made sick jokes about this. I admit it. It’s my defense mechanism. Tuesday, I was at a company when everything happened. They shut down. I went to a friend’s house, and she and I watched it together. Yeah, we made sick jokes about it. But Tuesday it was either laugh or go crazy. I chose to laugh. I’m not proud that I made those jokes. But I did. But I won’t share any of them. They weren’t directed at the tragedy in general, or anyone who may have lost their lives in it. I’m not that much of a dick.
If I ever hear anybody making or repeating any type of idiotic comment about these events, I will go off on a tirade. I can consider myself fortunate that my friends and relatives made it out of the WTC ok. How can any person not have empathy for those people who weren’t as fortunate?
And while we’re at it, I don’t ever want to hear another derogatory comment about New Yorkers again. I’ve always brushed them aside when they were directed at me, but no longer.
I also notice the Daily Show is reruns, though it may have been already. I kind of feel bad for those guys, they do a great send up of the news, but I’m sure they realize it will be a while before they can make jokes about anything.
I suppose the main difference is not that people aren’t making them (I’ve thought of one myself), but that no one is repeating them. And they seem to be met with universal disapproval.
I’ve made jokes about how the media has covered the situation. I mentioned that if they show enough angles of the second plane going into the building, it will only be a matter of time before they put together a bullet-time(ala Matrix) version of the crash. Then I said that it will only be awhile before MGM has a ride based off it.
I was making fun of the media, of course. How could you make fun of so many deaths?
Gosh, I hate to do this, but the following is copied directly from the <allegedly current events> newsgroup uk.current-events.us-bombing.
Remember folks, I’m just the messenger.
Moderator’s Notes: And I’m charged with determining the standards of decency around here. In that capacity, I’ve deleted this tasteless trash.

Well, if you hated to do this, perhaps you shouldn’t have . . .
southern style, reprinting those was truly tasteless. you’re not “just the messenger”, the messenger HAS to deliver his message. you did not HAVE to reprint that. obviously, no one you love was in those buildings. that was crude and uncalled-for.
SouthernStyle: It was your choice to submit those jokes. Just because they existed doesn’t mean that you had any kind of obligation to post them on this message board.
From your prefacing comments, we can see that you knew they would be hurtful. Yet you posted them anyway.
Mods, may I please request that the offensive and hurtful content of SouthernStyle’s post be deleted? Thank you.
Normally, I’m all for sick and tasteless jokes. But I think it’s a bit too soon for this sort of thing. Can we please get a moderator to delete this? Or should I start a Pit thread about the content?
