No it’s not funny. But every week preachers across America preach that millions of people are going to burn hell for not worshipping the right God and for having sex with the wrong people. And when they’re not doing that, then they are insisting that the unverse was created in 7 days and damn to anyone who doesn’t believe that. None of these ideas are funny, either. Politicians still attend these churches, though, and few people think to give them grief about it.
And when those preachers poison minds so that other groups of people are affected - than, you’re right, it’s not “funny” in any way. However, if a politician told me that he had attended a church for twenty years, that the preacher was his mentor, and he knew nothing about what appears to be a common racial attitude with that preacher - one which even draws applause from the congregation, I’d question that politicians veracity -
He has made a clear choice. What more do you want him to do? Wright is free to talk as much as he likes, but he doesn’t represent Obama. Obama removed him from his campaign, and I doubt he’ll ever been seen in public with him again. The news outlets may not let this go as long as Wright is out there speaking, but Obama can’t stop him from doing that.
PRIOR to the statement Obama just gave? I don’t think so. In fact Obama said the first go round that: “I can no more disown him than I can disown the black community.”
That was a pretty clear break. I don’t know what else he can do. I see that the Fox News scumbags are still trying to connect the dots to make Obama a racist radical by association. They keep insisting that Wright is “hurting him politically.” I can’t fathom why it should. What an asinine thing to fixate on as a political issue. Are Americans really that retarded that they’re going make a voting decision based on this?
I think it’s also extraordinarily hypocritical since the GOP has been joined at the hip with right wing, religious bigots for decades and the media’s never once made it an issue. It’s incredibly sad that anyone thinks this matters at all, much less that it matters more than Iraq or the economy or health care or even gas prices.

Give it up. He’s done it now. He wasn’t going to throw a good man under the bus to please a bunch of indignant, white conservatives. He is to be commended for staying loyal as long as he did.

When did Obama ever say that Wright was his “mentor?”

Which, it is amazing to think, was approximately one month.
We live in crazyland and at times I need to step back and realize that the average person thinks next to nothing about this stuff.

Forget Fox News. Chris Matthews on MSNB did his entire program on the subject yesterday. There was also a full segment on PBS’s New Hour. Everyone was talking about how this hurts Obama politically because it does. You keep harping on Fox as if they were the source of the problem. As long as Wright puts himself out there, and as long as Obama keeps talking about it, it’s going to be news across the board.

I’ve heard this asserted several times, and now I’ve even seen it underlined!
Is there any evidence whatsoever that it has hurt him, or is all of this nothing but baseless opinion spouting, underlined or not?
Reviewing this thread, I note that nobody has offered anything to back up Martin Hyde’s assertion (quoted in the OP) that Obama is a “racist,” let alone “a black man with a sense of entitlement that hopes to “put one over on whitey” by getting elected to the Presidency where he will proceed to implement some of the most horrifying programs of wealth redistribution from white to black we’ve ever seen.”
I did look. Obama didn’t say he was never aware of Wright’s views. He said this last night:
He’s referring to specific statements. The right wing meme that Obama has denied all knowledge of Wright’s beliefs has no foundation in truth. It’s just more propaganda.
It’s just common sense that someone who spent 20 years with a mentor would know about the person’s personal views on life.
I mean, someone had to teach him that black folk are better at music. He wasn’t going to learn that from his left brained mama. Looking back, it’s amazing he managed to get through Harvard Law School.
The curious part is that we’ve never seen any programs of “wealth redistribution from white to black” in American history, unless you count welfare or affirmative action, which you shouldn’t. Even that “40 Acres and a Mule” policy was reversed after Lincoln died. Why do people such as Martin even think in such terms?!

The fact that Obama is spending a lot of face time distancing himself from Reverend Wrong would imply its a problem. When you poop on gun-totin’ church goers and that’s not at the top of your remove-foot-from-mouth list then, absolutely, it’s a problem.
Here’s the problem - Obama continuing to say that he knew nothing about Wright’s “beliefs” has the look and feel of a lie. I believe it’s a lie.
Based on what evidence do you “believe” it’s a lie? Because something “looks” and “feels” like a lie to you isn’t evidence that he’s lying. On what grounds do you propose that Barack Obama is a liar whose word shouldn’t be taken when he gives it? A cite similar to Hillary saying she had to duck and run from sniper fire in Bosnia, when the video evidence proves otherwise, would be a good example of evidence that calls one’s believability into question. Do you have anything like that that shows Barack Obama to be a liar, generally, who shouldn’t be taken at his word when he says straight out that he hadn’t heard the sermons of Reverend Wright’s from which the controversial clips were taken?

Well, one “source” of the “problem” of “putting Wright out there” seems to be a huge Hillary supporter.
I feel really bad for Barack, because you know he must be heartbroken that someone he admired so greatly has turned out to be such a colossal idiot. It’s happened to us all at one point in our lives or another, but thankfully ours haven’t been so public and so brutal.

Obama is now denouncing Wright ROFL!!! Oh, this is hilarious. Gee, I guess Wright now said something that he never said before. Hmmmmm.
What a naked political ploy to try to “argue” publicly to distance himself from Wright. People will see through this hypocritical attempt at having it both ways by Obama. Sorry, Obama, Wright’s yours. Your supporters (like on here) have been saying “What’s wrong with Wright?” Nothing! LOL

Yeah, pretty much.
Obama knew and liked Wright for 20 years. Wright came out with some recent stuff that hit harder than Obama was used to, but he gave Wright the benefit of the doubt. Now Wright’s continuing to be a putz, and Obama can’t give him any more chances.
It’s perfectly normal human behavior, and I’ve had to do it with a few friends who suddenly turned stupid. I tried to defend them at first, because to my knowledge they weren’t previously that stupid, but when they wouldn’t stop I had to break off the friendship. It sucks, but it happens.
It’s nothing unusual, but because Obama’s a candidate you don’t like, this is backpedaling. Yeah, sure.
Apparently PObama is damned if he does and damned if he doesn’t in some people’s eyes. I mean if he douesn’t distance himself from Wright, why not? If he is distancing himself, then he is a liar?
