Two friends of mine have significant birthdays coming up, and I need ideas for significant gifts. They’re brother and sister (but not mine).
Friend #1: 30 year old guy living with long-term girlfriend in a small house. Good job but looking to jump careers.
Friend #2: 25 year old woman living with her mother. Short-term boyfriend. A number of temporary/part-time jobs.
I’ve considered the usual: gift certificates, restaurant visits, etc. but significant birthdays deserve something better.
Polling the SDMP for creative content. Dopers, any ideas?
When my brother turned 30, my gift to him was throwing a big party at my house, since he had a pretty small house. I just told him to invite whoever, and it worked out really well.
The best birthday present I ever got was from my husband on my 30th birthday. I’m sort of an amateur writer, and he snuck around and gathered up everything I’ve ever written that he could lay his hands on. He collected it all together and had it published by a self-publishing book Company, and had 10 copies made.
Pretty cool, huh?
If either one of these two people have any kind of artistic bent than honoring something that they have already created is a great gift. If one of them sketches, then having their sketch framed would be cool. Or, if you can get your hands on a photograph he or she has taken, you could maybe get that framed.
If neither is artistic, you might consider finding a particularly good photo of one of them and haven’t enlarged and framed. If you want to spend a little more, there are many artists who can make a painting or sketch from a photograph. Either of these choices would, I think, send the message that you care about the person.
For a simpler but still thoughtful idea, consider treating them to a massage.
Good luck!
For the 30 year old, buy him burial insurance. Or Geritol.
No one actually did this to me, but on my 30th birthday, I got an advertisement for burial insurance in the mail. I found it morbidly amusing.
