"Significant Others" on Bravo

Anyone watch? I thought it was freakin’ hilarious. The show follows the lives of several couples all of whom are in couples counseling. Supposedly the show is unscripted and the actors are all trained in improvisation. I’m lousy at quoting bits of dialog so I won’t try, but I’m definitely adding it to my list.

I watched both episodes. I laughed several times and will probably watch it again, but the people were not very likable. I didn’t see a lot of redeeming qualities about them. This may change. But if I don’t watch it again, it will be because they are unpleasant people.

I hated it. Please tell me there are others out there who that this show was a total waste of time. None of the characters had depth that exceeded that of a parking lot puddle. None of them were likable. Granted some of the situations were realistic but not funny. No insights were offered and no original comic situations developed. Maybe it’s just not targeted at me. What ever the case I turned it off after 20 minutes and watched a Scrubs repeat.

I was looking forward to it, till I heard it was mostly improv. I hate improv. Maybe because I’m a writer . . .

Well that’s hardly fair, Eve, I mean it’s not like anyone improvises biographies.

OK, maybe Irving Shulman…

I saw about two-thirds of one episode – the one that aired after Queer Eye – and thought it was pretty funny. (I would’ve seen more, but I was barred from the living room during some present wrapping.) I thought the art gallery scene was hilarious, especially the husband’s conversation with the flirting blonde. And the guy who’s freaking out about fatherhood was also quite funny.

While I understand why some people don’t like watching people they don’t like, I don’t think it’s a fatal flaw in most comedy. I enjoyed it.

This being Bravo, I assume they’ll be rerun. Several times. I’ll try to catch them later this week.
