Sigs

I guess I never knew this (because I used to never use sigs), but your Sig is permanently fixed to your profile, and not the post you attached the Sig to.

So if my Sig every day in January said “Happy New Year” and then I changed it to “Happy Valentine’s Day” for every post in February, it appears that all the January posts will adopt the new sig as well.

Weird, and a little unexpected. That’s all.

It can make references to sigs in older posts somewhat non-sensical, not always in an aesthetically pleasing way, either.

Exactly. You don’t want to respond to an OP with simply “I think my Sig says it all” if your sig is going to be in flux like that…

Yep, when you change your sig file the newest file is what is displayed on all your posts, even the very oldest ones.

Is there a section of the rules that explains what we are and are not allowed to link to in signatures?

Here you go

Jim

Thanks, but that doesn’t mention anything about what we can link to, only the content of the sig itself.

I think what you’re really looking for is this:

From this post in the stickies:

This is specifically mentioned for hyperlinks . . . but is also true of sig files that contain hyperlinks. Or anything else, for that matter; if you would like to advertise on the Straight Dope we prefer you purchase an ad.

You can review the registration agreement/rules at any time by clicking on the “Rules” hyperlink in the blue band at the top of the page.

Thanks for the info. I did see that, but I wasn’t 100% clear on what it meant. I take it that means we’re not allowed to link to our blogs or websites in our sigs?

If your website is primarily devoted to selling things, no, don’t link to it. If your site is mostly personal, and you have an Amazon referral thingy, or you sell a few T-shirts, that’s probably OK. If you have any doubts, EMAIL a couple of admins/mods (I say a couple because we do occasionally spend time doing things that aren’t board related, believe it or not).

Thanks Lynn. That makes sense.
