God, I can’t get over this game. Its been out two years and I am still obsessed with it. I would go so far as to say I am a groupie.
I have made a SH wallpaper for my PC ith images obained from the disc itself. I have turned the “Lisa Death scene” into an .avi and watch it from time to time, not without a hint of sandess (I think I actually cried the first time I saw it).
I’ve gotten all five endings, and used all the “secret” weapons, of which the chainsaw or katana is undoubtedly the best. (drill sucks and raygun is too cheap, I think).
I’ve played the game in the sorta-FPS mode, where the camera constantly sits on the players shoulder. As if the game could actually get more terrifying, but it did. Damn that school!!!
This game, IMO, is by far and bar none the best game I’ve ever played, even though it is not without its flaws.
Any of you agree that it is at least one of the best PS games available?
Oh, and have you noticed that the newspapers in the game all say “Bill Skins Fifth!” on them?
My son refused to play at night if he was alone because it was that scary. I played it through only once. Boy am I glad I didn’t listen to my son and just kill the lady cop (you see, I got personally involved with her and couldn’t bring myself to do it 'cause I thought I could save her.)
I just replayed Myst for the second time and did it in a day. Now I’m gonna find Silent Hill and do it all over again. I doubt if I could do it in a day, though.
The game can be beat in one day, though it’d be best not to do it in one sitting (actually, best is a matter of preferece, the terror is best in one sitting!).
If you know exactly where to go and don’t fumble around, it can be beat in, IIRC, a little over four hours. Compare this to the other long standing fave, RE2, and that’s over twice as long (I beat RE2 in just over and hour and fifteen minutes).
I first played this game about a year or so back, when one of my online friends kept recommending it to me over and over again. So one day, I had finally purchased it.
I knew -nothing- about the game. Other than the fact that it was survival-horror.
I played it not knowing what to expect. At night. All alone in my house. With the lights off. On a perfectly silent evening. No wind–no rain, no traffic, no nothing.
I also really like this game, or should that be liked? I completed it twice, once on easy and again on the more difficult mode which followed on directly. However, since I couldn’t make head nor tale of the first two ‘endings’ I gave up pursuing any more and haven’t returned to the game since. That was about a year ago and this thread is making me think about giving it another shot. 2 questions:
For those who’ve seen every ending, is it worth it in the end? I didn’t like the 2 endings I saw and felt they didn’t answer any questions, instead asking about 15 more and leaving me further in the dark. Will everything be answered?
When you complete the game the first time and you get the ending of Harry lying, presumably dead, in the car what on earth is going on?. I took it to mean the whole game was some sort of dying dream. Was I right?
I played this once only at a friend’s; we took shifts with the controller which worked out well. The only game since the original “Alone in the Dark” to seriously creep me out.
My favorite moment was getting into the parallel-universe/darkside for the first time in the school.
“Waittaminute. That’s it? We’re where we started.”
“Uh…Drastic?”
“Yeah?”
“That pentagram wasn’t there before, was it?”
“Er. No.”
Thus preceded a very careful and hesitant inching back towards the door into the courtyard, and muttered curses seeing what the interior of the school now looked like.
We only saw one of, and I think the worst possible, of the endings, though.
Terrific game. But ye gods, the voice acting was painful. We still occasionally will just look at each other and say, in voices devoid of any emoting whatsoever, “What? My daughter?”
A very comprehensive FAQ (but no one mentioned my "Bill Skins Fifth!).
I agree, also, with thir interpretation of the events pretty much completely, with only a small quibble about Lisa’s, the nurse, role. I also note that they have absolutely zero opinion on what the deal is with the “alternate” Silent Hill. But, still, the story itself is complete.
I agree with everyone. This is hands down one of the creepiest games I’ve ever played. If you want a game that will at least mildly freak you out, this is it. It doesn’t take an unreasonable amount of time to finish but it’s important to read through the walkthroughs to see what you need to do to get the rest of the endings so you don’t have to start from the beginning every time cause you saved over a vital part. Just thinking about it makes me want to play again, but its late and I think I might want to sleep tonight.
My best friend played through this game while I watched… it was creepy enough just watching. One time he gave me the controller, and fifteen seconds later I was just too creeped out to continue.
Yeah, the ending was confusing. Yeah, there were a couple plot holes. Yeah, the voice acting was weak. But GOD-FUCKING-DAMN, this game is absolutely terrifying. T’hell with the school… the HOSPITAL had every single one of my nerves standing on end.
And poor Lisa… to this day, my friend and I can reminisce about how she was a victim, and feel sorry for her…
Crunchy, 2 things. Yes my name is taken from my all time favourite movie, One flew over the Cuckoo’s nest and secondly thanks very much for the walkthrough guide! It answered all my questions, nice one!
Have you seen my daughter? Short, black hair, seven years old?
Yeup, it’s gonna take me more than one day to finish. You can only get the chanelling stone in New Fear? If that’s the case it looks like I’m gonna have to play it again.
–gosh, I’m stupid. I had the New Fear save, but trying to save myself from having to buy another one of those save thingies, I deleted it.
Hmm, I’ve been wondering, what plot holes do you think were there?
RE: The Channeling Stone
I played through this game with so much fervor that I was wondering about the channeling stone before even the video game mags had found out the information. Turns out I had missed one lonely spot to use it (outside the motel, damn it). Howoever, the letter requesting the info made it into the magazine Expert Gamer, my one and only claim to fame.
If you plan on playing through a third time, doing the channeling stone is worth it as you get an awesome weapon. Otherwise, its only a mildly humorous ending.
