Silicone Cake Pans: Yay or Nay?

I’m thinking of buying a silicone fluted tube (Bundt-type cake pan) in lieu of a traditional, metal fluted tube and I have a few questions.

  1. Are they a pain in the ass to work with? I mean, I would imagine transferring them to the oven while they’re filled with cake batter is a little awkward. I guess you could fill them while they’re on a baking sheet and transfer the whole shebang into the oven.

  2. Do you need a baking sheet? They’re so flexible that I can’t see how you wouldn’t make a mess unless you used one.

  3. Do you still need to oil and flour them? If you didn’t, that would be a major plus.

  4. Are they easier to clean? I would imagine the aforementioned flexibility would make them so.

So that’s what they call boobies these days? Cake pans?

I’ve been meaning to post the exact same questions. Come on, surely at least one Doper has tried one of those things. I think it would be easier to get the bundt cake out in one piece using a silicone pan.

IANASCPU (silicone cake pan user), but I have talked to someone who owns several and loves them. Her answers:
No
Yes (or at least it helps a whole lot, although well-made ones are fairly thick and sturdier than cheaply made ones)
No
Yes

She bakes a lot and gace them a rave review.

I use silicone baking vessels fairly regularly and I really like them. You do have to use a baking tray under the cake and loaf pans to stabilize the soft silicone, but this requirement takes care of any drips and overflows. I like the fact that I no longer have to grease and flour cake pans, and you can manipulate the cooked and cooled product out of the pan as if you were getting ice cubes out of a plastic tray. Incidentally, if there’s a Tuesday Morning store near you, you can buy a group of silicone baking products: cake pan, loaf pan, muffin pan, cookie liner and a bundt pan for about $30.00. Oh, don’t forget, you can also use your silicone pans for cold products as well. I anticipate lots of jello molds in the bundt pan that will be easily removable. I hope this helps.

For some rason I found this funny as hell.

Hey, is that the Tuesday Morning that’s in Bailey’s Crossroads (near the REI)?

Whoa, whoa, whoa. There’s an REI around here? How long has it been around?

Why the hell wasn’t I told about this?!

That REI is about half a block south of Rt. 7 on Carlin Springs Rd. (behind the Myer-Emco). There’s another one in College Park, I think.

Speaking of Tuesday Morning locations, there are three that I check out on a monthly basis. The one on Carlin Springs Rd next to REI, one in the West Springfield area on Rolling Road, and my personal favorite a large one in the Rose Hill shopping center right off of Franconia Rd. If a particularly good assortment has come in and parts are scattered, I’ll check in at all three locations to complete a set. I just picked up a few ceramic baking dishes from Cuisinart this way. Hope this helps.
