Silly V8 commercial

ummmmmmmmmm…Brunswick Stew. Does this mean I have to give up my board crush on you?

Well, i’m just wondering how long a word needs to be in fairly common usage for you to consider it appropriate? As i said, this usage can be traced back at least to the early 18C.

And surely you really are being humorous when you say that the fact that it’s the fourth entry is somehow indicative of it being incorrect. The “social gathering” definition was definition 4a; let’s now look at definition 4a of the word “definition”:

Sounds like a pretty common definition of definition to me.

And, by the way, all the OED has to say about “irregardless” (a word i hate) is:

In other words, the non-standard nature of the word is central to its definition, something that is not the case with the definition of barbecue.

On a rather unrelated note, it’s interesting that you spell it “humour.” Since i moved to the US, i’ve never seen anyone use this spelling; “humor” seems to be the norm over here. Are you transplanted from elsewhere?

I native Texan. However, I ranted once about picking up the extra “u” in certain words from those confounded UK Dopers. For some reason “humour” just looks more correct than “humor”.
swampbear, if you’ll promise not to consume that vile food-like substance in my sight, I’ll not hold it against you.

:smack: I**'m** native Texan.

I’d rather you smear it all over me.
